Phil Giordano was the former mayor of Waterbury, CT who was being investigated by the FBI for bribe-taking, extortion, and connections to organized crime while he was running for the US Senate. He was never indicted on any of those things though because he was arrested less than 6 months after the election for pedophilia and transporting a minor across state lines for illicit purposes, crimes he committed during 2 years under surveillance.

the city has run for almost all of the last 100+ years by an indomitable Republican machine which feeds on cronyism and corruption. They've been getting away with it for so long that they think they're invincible. I'm waiting...it's only a matter of time before the entire hierarchy is indicted for corruption. Then the national GOP will cry bloody murder claiming some sort of witch-hunt. Such indictments will have little to do with politics though and more to do with organized crime.

Say what you will about the GOP (Personally I hate them), they're not as corrupt as the Waterbury Republican Committee. These guys even make the Bush Evil Empire look minor league.

I have voted Republican in a local county commmisioners race.

Our county commissioner is a corrupt blowhard who loves nothing better than to hear the sound of his voice. Unfortunately, he also happens to be a Democrat. And even more unfortunately, he is very easy to con people into loving him, so he is very popular despite everything about him.

The last time he ran for re-election, he did have a Democratic challenger in the primary. Unfortunately, I didn't know about this guys' true colors at that time, and out of name recognition, I voted for him in the primary. After the primary, I read up on this guy and the more I heard about him, the less I liked him.

He did have a Republican challenger in the general who seemed reasonably sane and actually had a couple of good ideas. And since the election concerned only local issues, I didn't feel like I was giving into the Republican agenda. So I swallowed my pride and did a protest vote for the Republican challenger. Of course, the challenger lost handily and the county commish was easily re-elected. But I won't be voting for him in the next go-around, either.
