1. Hot tubs can be very therapeutic.
At least that's what my friends with orthopedic issues say.

2. They are great
On a recent trip I had a bone marrow biopsy and therefore had a very sore back...sitting in hot tub was just heaven for it....

3. a nice cheap bath additive, recommended by my massage therapist:
1/4 cup EACH:

sea salt
epsom salts
baking soda

dissolve in hottest bath water you can stand, fill the tub so you can soak and stay in bath for 20 minutes.

MAN is it great. Knocks the stuffings out of my fibro flares, IF I do it early enough in the flare.
(and I thank all powers that be that I don't get those as often as I used to)

HOWEVER having said all that, I still would love a hot tub, but have other things to do to my house first (like replace some seriously ancient appliances and carpeting)

Whatever you do, don't pay the first price you are quoted; you have to play car shopping games with the sales guys. He will go check with the manager after each of your rejections.

Don't accept any price until he comes back and tells you they have one that was "made for a guy in Michigan and it was the wrong size so we are sort of stuck with it, so we can give it to you for this price"

I am deadly series here. My brother in law was told by his boss this long story about hot tub shopping and the boss was finally offered the "hot tub from Michigan", which was what he thought was more or less reasonable so he bought it. So BIL goes to buy from same store. Gets same long song and dance. Finally, salesguy says "OK we have this one made for a house in Michigan...." So they bought that one..my sister says it is the best toy they have ever had.

4. i was training to run the boston marathon in 1985...
back then it wasn't a professional race. a thousand or so pros ran all official with numbers and such.

the remaining 10,000 of us just ran it to say we could/did, i suppose.

i transfered jobs from boston to california halfway during training with my boston work friends who i trained with. i got up to 20+ miles (two weeks away) all on my own when something screwed up with a tendon or something just below my calf muscle. i thought i was done.

there was a hot tub in the apartment complex i was living. every night i would dangle my injured leg in front of one of those soothing, wonderful jets.

i finished that race (3:54:06.15. ((they have this big digital clock)) i know, i know, its slow, but i did it!!!) (oh, and that probably would have been the best time i could have hoped for anyway. i run with the grace and efficiency of a sherpa humping gear up mt. everest...)

but i know it was that hot tub that made that possible.

hot tubs rule.

i wish i had one now...

5. Thanks everyone for the info.
I think we will use some the tax refunds for a hot tub.

My neighbors have had theirs for a few months but I never used it.

I am afraid this knee problem will be on going, an old bike accident coming back.

I could always use theirs but I think having our hot tub would be better.

The pain just went away.

I was able to go on a walk today, and I didn't need any aspirin.

Feeling almost normal again.
