World's ten worst vacation destinations
http://www.walletpop.com/2008/05/13/worlds-ten-worst-vacation-destinations/

<snip>10. Baghdad, Iraq: duh! Yet hundreds of thousands of Americans are spending their summers there. Go figure.

9. Dhaka, Bangladesh: pollution, proverty, overcrowding, and occasionally the entire country is swamped by a cyclone.

8. Yakutsk, Russia: winter temperatures drop to almost 60 below zero. But it's a dry cold.

7. Mogadishu, Somalia: Unless you're a fan of anarachy. If so, this is your spot. No gun laws!

6. Chernobyl, Ukraine: On the other hand, you won't have to fight crowds or provide your own night light.

5. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: Does the sobrique 'Hurricane Alley' whet your vacation appetite?

4. Pyongyang, North Korea: Like the movie Brazil without the laugh track. Welcome to Kimseyland!

3. Hey!
Have you ever been to Michigan? It's beautiful here, thank you very much. Just can't wait until the rest of the country comes begging for our water so we can slam the door in their faces if they're going to have that attitude.

On the other hand, I don't recall a hurricane ever hitting Oklahoma; that does make me wonder.

4. I lived in Michigan.
I have a very bad taste from that experience. The UP is beautiful, and filled with people who really should be part of WI. Parts north of Saginaw are beautiful. The rest of the state is pure crap, except Ann Arbor, which is fantastic, and really should be part of Ohio or Ontario.

I will never, ever live there again; nor will I ever enter that state again unless absolutely necessary.

5. Where?
I live in Ann Arbor but I loathe Ohio; they can never have anything good from my state.

Come visit again, we will make it up to you.

6. I lived in Flint. And no, my opinion of MI is not based on Flint.
My opinion of MI is also based on having traveled all over it and meeting its people, its politics, its "aesthetic", its ability to govern itself...

I'm sorry, but I gave it chance after chance, and of all the states I've been in and lived in, MI is the only one that leaves me with a sense of "shudder" and repulsion.

9. No, I lived there in the 80s. Granted, that was the "michigan is a total shithole" era,
but I've also been there post 2000, and I find it still a shithole.

I'm sorry.

I'm sure I'm not seeing it clearly, or I'm missing something - but, if I were given the opportunity to move to Michigan, I'd demand at least a fourfold increase in income so that I could afford to live in an area that isn't an ignorant wastefilled shithole and could, in a sense, use the income as a moat to keep away the common Michigander.

Obviously, I have a seriously negative opinion of Michigan, and before I say something insulting about the state, let me stop this conversation here. Clearly, you see it in a different way, and that's fine. But neither you nor anyone else will ever get me to change my mind nor to set foot in that state again (except the UP), unless under some sort of truly dire circumstance. So, this is my last post on the subject. I don't want to piss people off, and I don't want to sit here in an unproductive pissing match.
