Dudes, I love my new USB turntable
I bought an Audio Technica AT-LP2D-USB turntable because I have about 400 lps that I haven't been able to listen to. It works like a dream. I've "burned" about half a dozen lps to digital so far. Some of them you'd probably have a hard time finding any more- This Mortal Coil, Cocteau Twins, Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, Southside Johnny, Gino Vanelli (yeah, I know, but I still kind of like it)- stuff I haven't listened to in 20 years or more.

It's a bit time consuming but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than trying to replace each lp with a cd. I'm using Audacity to record and convert the vinyl to digital.

My wife doesn't even mind me spending all my time playing with computer since she gets to listen to the music as well. So far life is good...

Afterthought: I tried it on Vista first but Vista records everything in mono and it sucks. But on XP it works great.

1. Wait...what?
You mentioned Cocteau Twins and Gino Vanelli in the same sentence. I'm reasonably sure that this has never, ever happened before!

2. At least it was a linear transition:
This Mortal Coil - Cocteau Twins - Little Steven and Disciples - Southside Johnny and the Jukes - Gino Vanelli.

Question: What comes next?

3. I admit, it didn't sound the same last night as it did thirty years ago.
But at least I don't have any Air Supply or Adam Ant.

In all fairness, I got it when I was eighteen, a freshman in college, and I thought it was cool in a jazzy kind of way. And the one Gino Vanelli album I have (Brother to Brother) received four out of five stars on allmusic.com. It could have been a lot worse.

BTW, my wife did make the comment that she didn't think she'd be adding Vanelli to her Ipod...

4. In all fairness, I have Richard Marx and Rick Springfield in the CD collection.
Relics of the '80s, haven't been out of their jewel cases since then, but they still exist in the CD rack, mocking me.

To offset these abominations, I do have quite a bit of Aphex Twin, bauhaus, Minor Threat, and Social Distortion.

6. I have tons of punk from the 70s
and classic rock, of course. My tastes were (and still are) very eclectic.

7. My iPod has everything from Mozart to Marilyn Manson on it.
I might get Ella singing "I'm in the Mood for Love" followed by the Dead Kennedys doing "Police Truck." I love to set the 'pod to randomize, then let it rip.

8. That's the way I am
Mozart's Requiem
Doc Watson and David Grisman's Doc and Dog
Sex Pistols Never Mind The Bollocks
Luka Bloom Keeper of the Flame
Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison
R L Burnside and Junior Kimbrough (numerous songs)
and the afore-mentioned Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, etc.

About 6700 songs.

9. Eclectic is one thing. Gino Vanelli is another.

5. I have a box I have to rip.
It just takes so much time, so I'm too tired at the end of the day to do it.
