Country Legend Eddy Arnold dead at age 89
FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Country music legend Eddy Arnold, 89, died on Thursday morning.

He died around 4:30 a.m. at a Williamson County nursing home. Arnold's wife of 66 years died two months ago. The country artist would have been 90 years old next week.

Arnold dominated music charts for decades and had 28 No. 1 records, selling more than 85 million albums over his long career. From 1945 through 1983 he had 145 charted songs.

His mellow baritone on songs like "Make the World Go Away" -- a crossover hit on the pop charts in 1965 -- made him one of the most successful country singers in history. Arnold became a pioneer of "The Nashville Sound," also called "countrypolitan," a mixture of country and pop styles.

He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966, and the following year he was the first person to receive the entertainer of the year award from the Country Music Association. Known as the "Tennessee Ploughboy," Arnold was born on a farm in 1918 in Chester County, Tennessee.

1. And now I have an earworm....
I loved "Make the World Go Away" from an early age because it was one of my mother's favorites. RIP, Eddy Arnold.

3. I grew up in a house filled with the sounds of Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, Chet Atkins, Buck Owens...
Eddy had a very cool Christmas special a while back, when "The Nashville Network" was still around. One of his guests was LeAnn Rimes, at the time when her career was really starting to take off and she was sticking close to the traditional Patsy Cline-style country roots. The special was an old-fashioned reminder of no matter how far we travel in life, we have those fundamental things inside, the things that shape us and make us the people that we are.

So now Eddy's with Jim, and Chet, and Buck, and Johnny, and Hank. RIP, and thanks for the great music.

7. Here're two of Eddy's best : Tennessee Stud and Cattle Call.
My Mom and Dad both loved Eddy's music and I grew up with it.

RIP, Mr. Arnold.
