I swear my boss in on crack or something
We got an email last week stating we need to start drafting SOPs for a potential upcoming study. (That's standard operating procedures for people who don't have the joy of writing them.) She ends the email with "These activities should be charged to *proposal number*." So I do just that and this morning she tells me I can't charge my time to that number. I say it was specified in her email. She says no. :wtf: I go back to her email to make sure I'm not crazy (which I do a lot with her) and sure enough I'm correct. The most aggravating thing is she always says it in a condescending manner like you're an idiot. When I first started she told me THREE times to write SOPs for a procedure that was specific to that client even though it wasn't going to be GLP. When she gets the SOPs in the review process SHE ASKS ME WHY I'M WRITING THEM SINCE IT'S NOT GLP! :banghead:

I only communicate certain things with her via email because this happened all the time verbally when I first started so I wanted written evidence and she still refuses to admit she's ever wrong. Even when you show her the email she always tries to change the subject or says she has a meeting. I'm not the only one with this problem so I know it's not me. We'll have 5 people in a meeting writing down what she wants done but somehow all 5 people suffered a "miscommunication" and didn't understand. Well I guess we're all stupid! :banghead: If I didn't like the work and didn't mostly do work for projects run by someone else I would have quit a long time ago.

Thanks for listening to my whining.

1. Glad you have documentation
I think you should talk to HR about this. Isn't your other boss reasonable?
At least right now my job isn't that bad. Once I start this big validation project where my boss starts being pick, pick, pick I'm sure I'll be aggravated again....
Thats a little unsettling to hear its GLP..no its not..That could be trouble for a true GLP study..Thats why you should contact HR.

3. I've discussed her SEVERE mood swings with HR
She's either an exploding barrel of corn syrup or the grim reaper. I've requested to be removed from the R&D project she's "running" that I got stuck on. The director said no. HR said we all have our ups and downs. So that got nowhere. I came away feeling like I'm the one with the problem when everyone has discussed her strange behavior and feels similarly to myself.

I'm 'browsing' now but not actively looking. She was in charge of one project that we rebid on and most people think we're not getting. Client keeps postponing announcing it until all the data from the previous one is received which is often bad news. I'm basically waiting to see if we get it, if not she might leave or be 'asked to resign' since that was the only project she actually had. (Her position has to bring in $X per year, so it might take time.) If she's not going anywhere I will probably leave. No one else in the building will help our group out when we are swamped because they are too scared to approach her. 2 people have told me this directly, they were interested in the work but didn't want to talk to her.

10. I probably won't go anywhere until I find out if she got the rebid
I'm trying to 'suck it up' until then, except for my whining lounge post. :P I really like the work so I'm hesitant for that reason. Plus the 2 other project leaders that have gone to HR about her behavior, they carry more weight since they have higher positions.

14. Why are people like this coddled?
This is what I don't understand about business: 1. How do these nutjobs get to manage other people in the first place, and 2. Why are they never removed from their positions when they obviously can't do their job? Do they have pics of the HR director having sex with German Shephards? If she were a grunt she'd be written up for "a bad attitude," but because she's a manager she gets away with all kinds of shit.
This is the case in too many businesses I've worked in. There has to be an unwritten rule somewhere...

15. Well if you're bringing in lots of money
it's easier to replace the people under the psycho than the psycho especially if it's difficult to find people in that particular field. She was in charge of one large contract and a lot of people are hoping we don't get the rebid so she'll be gone, including a few people who work on it! (We have enough work to keep them busy, so it's not like they're going to get laid off.) I think she puts on her exploding barrel of corn syrup persona for the director despite the fact that those of us who report to her see the grim reaper pretty often and multiple people have complained.

Plus a PhD is like tenure. I saw it elsewhere too, it can be a license to behave however you want. Not to say all PhDs are like that, I've personally only dealt with a few. Much fewer than the ones who are fabulous people. If she was a grunt she probably would have been fired by now or at least sent for drug testing due to the mood swings.

21. Your answers
1. How do these nutjobs get to manage other people in the first place

As a reward for good performance and/or ass-kissing.

2. Why are they never removed from their positions when they obviously can't do their job?

By doing so, the *big* boss would be admitting he/she made a mistake by placing the nutjob in the position. They never make mistakes, right?

13. Does it make people paranoid?
Because she's mentioned several times that everyone else wants to steal her work. It might make that worse. But at least we'll get rid of that grim reaper personality. :)

And I've done the same as you...communicate important things only via email rather than verbally and save, save, save, save those emails!

Sorry! :hi:
