Poll question: Do you support sex-sex marriage?
"The main reason I am voting for Obama is because he supports sex sex marriage and Hillery does not."

Well, if that means same sex marriage or sex, then I can't support that. As long as it's within the same species.

But, I'm rather suspicious of someone who doesn't know how to spell Hillary. (Hillery??) Hmmm.....

14. I do, but I don't think he does. To be fair I'd totally throw gays under the bus if it'd end the war
Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 06:57 AM by Bucky
I know it sounds tacky, but gay marriage is an issue on which our side will end in the long run. It may take another 10-20 years, but eventually a liberty-based culture is going to recognize, as George W Bush put it in 2000, that "people have the right to enter into any kind of agreement they want." But the people dying in the occupation of Iraq--American and Iraqi--will not come back and the chances of expanding the violence into new territory continue to grow everyday the killing continues without a coherent plan for peace. It's not an easy thing for me to say, being the father of a gay teenager, but marriage equality is just one issue in a big stack of national issues and is simply not the highest priority.

(on edit)

There's no such thing as "gay marriage." There's marriage and either we recognize the rights of all people to have it or we don't.

16. Besides my daughter, you mean?
Actually, I have plenty of gay friends. I also have several former students who are in the army or Marines. One group is not getting their marriage rights recognized--however it is inevitable that one day in the near future this problem will go away. The other group, the kids I've taught over the past decade, is at risk of being killed while our country's reputation and honor are being destroyed by the Bush administration. Stupid as it is, these issues have been connected in the past. Bush & Cheney were reelected in large part based on irrelevant issues like gay marriage.

Politics is about cutting deals to make progress. My only point is ending the killing is an area where progress is more needed.

18. You know what? It is NOT a choice between ending the war or supporting civil equality.
Why put a strawman like that up even? Why, I would support replacing children's lunches with broccoli if it will end the war. I would support taxing everyone 10% more if it would end the war. I would support reducing the number of H1 visas if it would end the war. I would swim in a sewer if it would end the war.

I would support repealing Roe-v-Wade if it would end the war. I would support BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH if it would end the war.

Idiotic.

20. I don't know how to respond to this
One one hand I agree with you that marriage equality will be a reality within my lifetime, but I can't believe that you said you would "totally throw gays under the bus" for any reason, especially since you have a gay child. Then again, Dick Cheney throws gay people under the bus and he has a gay daughter, so I guess nothing surprises me, even from some of those who know and love gay people.

21. Your poor gay teenager.
There is no reason why, with 300 million people in this country, we can't work on hundreds of issues at the same time. For some people, the war isn't the highest priority but you don't hear them saying the would throw our armed forces under the bus for energy independence, for example.

I'm glad most people realize that they can support marriage equality AND ending the war at the same time. They can multitask!

26. I understand what you mean, but you chose your words poorly. Hence the flames.
I agree that the right not to be blown to pieces is a more immediate concern than the right to marry, and it's obvious that fear-mongering about "the gays" was a major part of Bush's disgustingly cynical re-election campaign. But blaming the 2004 election results on gay marriage is myopic for several reasons, one of them being that most Dems haven't been behind the issue that strongly in the first place, seeing it (perhaps justifiably) as a political third rail.

In theory, though, if it really were true that we could elect Democrats (and thus help end the war) by further de-emphasizing civil rights issues... Well, it would take a Solomon to work that one out.
