Help! Brain cramp needs relief. Anyone know the classic short stories foisted upon school kids?

We're sitting here trying to remember the short stories that were assigned to us in 7th and 8th grade English classes back in the early 80s. Shirley Jackson's The Lottery, DH Lawrence's Rocking Horse Winner, Mark Twain's jumping frog, etc....

We're all sitting here trying to remember the author and title of a creepy one about some guy stuck on an island who finds out he's to be the prey in a big game hunt. Are we nuts (don't answer that!) or does this ring a bell with anyone?

That was a short story that freaked me out as a kid.
