Well, my first full week at new job, and I got a letter in the mail today from my company
From the administrative assistant to the owner of the company telling me how well I did and that she was very happy with my work.

Not something I expected - but in the first full week there have I done a ton, including fixing data base issues, backup issues, and network mapping and management (the problem I solved for her had huge implications to the company).

I was shocked that I got a thank you letter in my home mail box.

I have been telling tech companies since last July that I was a solid worker with over 10 years experience and still no bites. This company hires me and I have turned around several major issues in a week (nothing against the other tech, my boss, he is not a computer tech by training but has done a good job keeping them afloat all these years - she even thanked him in the letter for being patient enough to wait for someone like me to come along and not just hiring anyone off the streets to help him).

The HR director told me this morning as well that she has heard nothing but good things about me (I happened upon her while getting some coffee).

I ran three large data centers for the second largest bank in the US for years and did it well, now I am working in a small operation and fixing their issues left and right.

And I have to say, I like working for the small company better - even if the pay, benefits, and perks are less.

Not perfect of course, but it feels good to have been there a total of ten days and having the great feedback I do.

I don't know how I will top this next week, but I am working on it :)

I am already working on writing new programs to manage things (snmp, event logs, etc), have found ways to re-purpose old servers for new uses (saving money), and have dropped tape usage from backups by a ton.

It feels good to be back at work and feeling useful. So many passed me up because I was overqualified. Sorry about their loss :)

1. My dear Straight Story!
Wow, that's incredibly good news!

They're most likely thanking their lucky stars that you came along when you did!

Biggo congrats!

2. Well...
The issue I saved them from saved them not only a lot of money, but from getting egg in their faces.

Data bases and reporting are something I have done a lot of, and their reports were WAY off.

All is good now :)

They lost a senior member of their staff (in computers) months ago, and my poor boss has been doing all he can to keep things running for them.

He is a damned good guy, and knows their needs - just not how to plan it all out for the future and fix issues he has never dealt with.

My goal is to make him look good (he hired me on the spot when he interviewed me) and not take too much credit. But still, I feel good that I did enough this last week to fill two pages in my report. And I am even going in on my own time tomorrow to insure our new backup plan is going well and to finish up some other things.

Feels good to be back at work and doing something positive.

8. It felt good after so many months of not being hired
Someone with some sense hires me and I kick butt for them. Finally someone gave me a chance (and hey, I am not even H1B  )

10. What a great thing for them to do! It speaks well of your work.
You should be proud. And you're apparently working for good people. How fortunate for you and them!
