YouTube Challenge! Country songs that you hated as a kid but grew to love.
I remember vacation trips in the red '71 VW Microbus, and being forced to listen to old-school country music that I swore that I'd hate for the rest of my life. But somehow....

1. I wish I had one.
I honestly don't think I heard a country song until I was 19 or so. Unless "Islands in the Stream" counts, but that would only be 'cuz it's Dolly Parton.

Was a country singer ever on The Muppets? Maybe that'll trigger a memory.

I'll bet I have repressed memories of bad country music. Oh, this might be a tragic Friday.

Seriously, "everybody needs somebody to look down on". That's a laff riot.

4. I can't think of any.
Country music has always been auditory tear gas for me -- I hear it, I want to leave the room.

5. This one

This one has some commentary, but you got to have the famous live version at the Opry. The studio version sucks by comparison.

12. And rightly so
Willie's finest composition, as sung by an angel of sorts. :)

16. And I thought for sure that was Seven Spanish Angels behind that link, heh
Very nice. My god, nylon strings never sounded so good. I wish I could get him to put some Savarez strings on that thing (think of the sound from the live acoustic version of Hotel California or maybe something by the Gypsy Kings).

I can't find the Willie song I want (I'll Take You With Me), so I'll have to ease on into some Lyle:

7. As a teenager in the 70s, I hated anything that had to do with country music. Now that I've grown up
I realize that I missed a lot of really good stuff. Here's Rita Coolidge and Kris Kristofferson:

10. You'll come around. I did.
I actually have a couple of degrees in music (you know...serious music) and I've grown to love a lot of the old stuff that I used to hate. Maybe it's just nostalgia. I dunno.

15. None. I grew up loving country music but I can't think of a song I hated then liked..
But since I hate to miss a good country music thread, I'll throw this in as a childhood song I loved.

People discovered Johnny Cash, finally, and Willie, and even Bocephus, but this guy was the best of all of them (maybe except Willie), and gets no love. RIP.

21. My family was big on Marty Robbins.
I hated this song, but then I saw him play it with his band a couple years ago when he opened for Dylan. Now love the guy and snort at the song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqouuUqzg-A

After he played it he said something like, "People always ask why I wrote that song." (Pause, shrug). "And I just say, 'cause I was the only one who knew the words.'"

Go see Merle Haggard when you can. He'll step back every now and then and rip out some very tasty licks on that old Telecaster.

That was on the 90 minute cassette that I was forced to listen to on the road to Myrtle Beach when I was 10 years old. <sniff>

26. Hey man, good call on the thread....
I've checked every link and it's brought back similar memories for me, so thanks. Mine turned on a plastic holder of 8-tracks in a mobile home parked outside my grandma's in Ruston, Louisiana.

Thanks again

27. I wouldn't say I hated this one
But it is one I remember and sort of making fun of. I didn't mind a lot of country music when I was young.

I listen to this guy all the time now, he had so many great songs.
