Poll question: Would the film "Serenity" have been better if the series "Firefly" had never existed?
Assuming that the film had been released exactly as-is, with the only difference being that the antecedent tv series hadn't existed in the first place.

1. The series established the characters, making Serenity much more satisfying to watch
Until the effing end, that is! :grr:

2. I've never seen even five seconds of the series
But I have to say that, absent the series, Serenity would be one of the best stand-alone science fiction films of the past decade or so.

The way they drop into the action-in-progress with little more than the barest of exposition (by an unreliable narrator, no less!) is fantastic. I love films that say, in essence, "Here we go. Try and keep up, and don't ask too many questions." It's especially good if the film works as a self-contained piece, which Serenity does.

8. You should invest in the series (about $25 new IIRC) If you liked Serenity, you'll
like just about every episode. And you will finally be "in" on the "I'll be on my bunk" lines....

10. Except the part where we collectively clinch our fists to the heavens and curse Faux
for not giving the series even half a chance. :grr:

3. "I shadowed Firefly all day"
"What day was that?"

"Shadow-Day! That's-a some joke, hey, boss?"

7. it would be the same, in that it would still be boring and possess great suckage
Whether or not making "Firefly" disappear would make it suck up Firefly's suckage, or lessen the overall serenity-based suckage is debatable.

9. You have a point in that there are no action scenes involving the demolition of automobiles which
you normally enjoy watching. :hi:

13. It might have been better
if I wasn't so freaking stoned when I watched it that I actually started watching 1/2 hour into the movie and didn't notice. And my fried little brain thought that it brought to mind every sci-fi cliche "oh it's time for the bar scene with funny aliens" "oh it's type for the plucky heroine to do something plucky" "Oh it's time for the smart ass hot shot with the heart of gold to do something unexpectedly sweet" But, I didn't really give it a fair shot because I wasn't actually sober.
