its very frustrating , makes me almost not desire muffins ever again.

1. That's why I always use the stairmaster
I can burn over 500 calories at one time. Of course, I have to do program 9 (steep ramp) at level 8 for 30 minutes and sweat like a pig to make it happen. :eyes:

Ugh.

10. Does the machine just take pulse
or does it also ask for preliminary info, such as sex, weight, etc?

12. 200 calories
how long are you staying on it and at what speed? 30 minutes should be more than 200 calories, I think if you're busting your ass.

13. I start with inclination 0.0 an d speed 0.5
Then increase the speed every minute by 0.5 and also the inclination by 0.5

I stop at 5.0 inclination and 5.0 miles/hour and stay there a couple of minutes , I maintain my pulse between 170 and 180 during those couple of minutes .

Then I slowly decrease the speed by 0.5 a minute , also the inclination .... until the 30 minutes are up.

I sweat so much during this routine I am practically dripping.

Maybe I am not fit yet

16. The key is getting your prime bpm and keeping it there for 20 minutes or so.
Take 220 and subtract your age. That's your prime bpm (beats per minute). Keep that rate for a solid 15-20 minutes, and the calories will burn, regardless of what the machine says.

17. Using your formula , that means maintaining 190 pulse rate for 20 minutes
(220-30)

That impossible , I am breathless at 180-185 ....

This sites says I should maintain 114 to 152 for my age and as a person of average fitness

18. That's why it's "prime"
It's not impossible. You just have to build up to it. It's a goal. You want to burn calories, then get there.

Give Paige my regards.

3. Eat more veggies and less processed foods
It's easier to take them off the front end than the back end, if you know what I mean. And go for a nice leisurely walk in the fresh spring air and try not to worry so much about calories.

4. are you running at a steady state or using HIIT?
HIIT (high intensity interval training) elevates your resting metabolic rate so you're burning calories up to 24 hours after you step off of the treadmill.

14. If you don't already do some weight
training. Muscle uses up a lot of calories so the more you have the better you burn. A lot of people put a lot of emphasis on aerobics but it is really weight training that will help fire up your calorie burning furnace.

21. Yip, that's the story. A "fitness professional" (salesman) told me the secret
Edited on Tue Apr-08-08 09:13 PM by UTUSN
First, where *I'm* coming from:

* I'm of an age where just "managing" and "diabetes" are factors.

* I'm not out to be an Olympic athlete, just to MOVE for 30 minutes per day.

So, I've been on a treadmill for about six years. It was a good one, good motor, good automatic incline. After the first few months the "fitness professional" was doing a follow up and I asked why there had been NO weight loss and NO reduction of the beer belly. He said he would pull back the curtain for me, just for me.

He said that it was all a numbers game, numbers of calories. 30 minutes on the treadmill only burns about 170 calories. As the o.p. says, something like a Quaker oatmeal square has 270 calories. So there. Add on anything else you will: a Lite = 100 calories. 15 Lites = 1,500 calories. Carry on.

P.S., oh, I've gotten some postive feedback (read "sexual advances") regarding the butt and legs.

22. So you fired that trainer, yes?
It is a numbers game, but not the one he was involved in.

30 minutes on the treadmill burns calories. Maybe not 170, depending on the end user.

Funny thing about fitness "teachers" which is what trainers should be. They don't. They don't teach, and they should, fuckwads. YEAH, I'm calling you shitbricks out, bitches. You idiot morons banking cash based on your IDIOT fucking advice.

A true fitness "teacher" does that, they don't cache potential money/clients.

23. Here's a positive look to it.
First, the calorie counters on exercise machines notoriously undercount/overcount calorie usage. So, you could be burning more than you think. Secondly, your goal should be overall fitness : get your heart strong, lift weights, stretch and eat well. If you do these things, the pounds will come off. You may never be svelte, but if you're in good health, that's all that matters.

In addition, it only takes reducing your energy input by 500 calories a day to lose about a pound of fat a week. So, if you lose 200 calories through cardio alone, all it takes is shaving off another 300 calories. This can be done by skipping little snacks, or just cutting down your portions some. It takes discipline, but you'd be surprised how just showing a little willpower will cause your body to get rid of the excess weights, once you start telling your body it needs less food.

25. As I understand, it's not just how many calories you burn while exercising.
Working out not only burns immediate calories, but it also increases your metabolism to burn more calories all day long.

26. If you're really concerned about the calorie count
try using an elliptical machine instead. I burn over 300 calories in 30 minutes. But like others have said, the calorie counter on the machine isn't the be all, end all.

Do you feel healthier? Are you losing weight? Are you gaining muscle? If you're answering yes to any of those questions, don't worry about the freakin' calories! ;)

27. Just keep up and it will pay off...
I remember when I first got my bowflex treadclimber I thought I was gonna die after 15 mins on the thing going only half the max speed it could go... Kept going on it and now I go full speed for at least 60 mins (usually 65 mins to even out the miles I went)... As a result I went from 222lbs down to 175lbs in 3.5 months...
