Boycott marriage in general!
Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 09:09 AM by brigadoon
Should the fundies seriously pursue their push for a "marriage amendments" I propose that we encourage a boycott of marriage altogether.

Civil Unions can exist between a man and a woman too. More and more states and private industries are funding benefits for life partners.
A couple can even have a ceremony without a marriage contract.

We need to take this opportunity to make our country more strongly identify the separation of religious and secular. Marriage is religious and should not even be a subject of law. Civil Union is secular and should be dealt with in that sector.

1. I agree and I think
that is a very reasonable solution to this. I have been married for 22 years, I never wanted to get married. It always felt like becoming property and I have learned over the years that you will be treated like property in small ways mostly. Make marriage for those who want the religious support, everyone else should have the civil union then equality is not the issue, it gets the churches out of the discussion. Is that what you were saying? Sorry, I was processing as I wrote.

4. Union with another person is a life-long proposition -
The life of the union determines how long it will last.

I was married when I was 20. I thought it would be all strawberries and cream. I also needed an escape from the responsibility of determining who I was.

My husband and I have been together for 40 years. We were married for 25, divorced for 12 (2 of those years apart, 10 living together) and have been married again for 3. We are married again because I needed to be covered by health insurance. We will probably divorce again when I am 65 so that my social security will go up. How ridiculous.

It's all about equality.

2. May I suggest posting this in GD, or Civil Rights?
You might get more discussion in one of those forums.

It's an interesting proposal -- I've never heard it before.

BTW: "A couple can even have a ceremony without a marriage contract." <chuckle> We know. We gay folk have been doing it for decades. It's one of the reasons I get so infuriated when RW ignoramuses say "You're not married!" :grr: Look, pal: if it walks like a duck . . . .

6. Yes
I fail to see the difference as well. I know gay couples who have been together forever and are just as committed or often far more committed than many hetero people. How could anyone screw "marriage" up worse than we heteros have? I mean really, this is what we hold up as sacred? Give me a fucking break.
