21. Hardly. 19" CRT here.
LCD screens are prone to having dead pixels. When a pixel remains black or solid red, that gets annoying in a hurry. and it takes more than a handful of dead pixels to get the company to replace their POS when it starts to lose pixels.

CRTs also look crisper than LCDs...

A 19" CRT is much more likely able to support higher resolutions that a LCD of the same dimension. I have yet to see a 19" monitor that can display 1600x1200, though it's been a few months since I bothered looking.

Nor are they limited to 60Hz frequency, although on a LCD display this doesn't seem to be as important...

I am aware that LCDs have some big advantages though (size and power consumption) and for most intents and purposes are quite nice...

4. I voted 800x600 but
.
.

I'm running two monitors, one off the mumboard, and the other off a vidcard.

A 17" Optiquest @ 800x600 and an old 14" Samsung SyncMaster @ 680x480 as the secondary.

my 14" is 3 feet away from my eyeballs, and the 17" is 5 feet away.

I can set the Optiquest at 1280x1024 if it was right in front of my face, but this is much easier on the eyes for those days that I "live" in front of my 'puter, and that's alot when I'm not workin'.

6. I picked two monitors, but it could be four
Two for me, two for my wife, who's desk is right next to mine.

Theoretically I could be using four monitors, but I haven't tried it yet.

How does it work? Two dual head video cards, one AGP, the other PCI. Debian Linux with a Backstreet Ruby patch. We each have our own keyboards and mice. No real problems sharing resources. Dual processors, 2 gigs of RAM, 15K RPM SCSI drives. We both use fluxbox, which is xinerama-aware. It's not a bad set up.

Having two monitors has really boosted our productivity, and it's probably the best value per pixel if you want a lot of screen space.

I'd like to try one of those three-head Matrox video cards, but they're still too spendy.

10. xinerama is just an X thing for handling dual monitors
"Xinerama is an extention to the X11 windowing enviroment which allows multiple screens to be treated as a single seamless desktop"--So like my virtual workspace is 1024 x 2560. Some window managers aren't "xinerma-aware," but fluxbox is, so it is in fact pretty seamless.

My wife teaches, and much of her work is done online, teaching online courses, or working with online components of meatspace courses.

I wanted dual monitors for my art work. I usually keep all my tools open in one monitor, and the image I'm working on open in the other, and if I want a more panoramic view I can stretch it out.

But really it was my wife's needs that led us to get so many monitors. She had been working from her ibook, and had some complaints. I read some study about how women especially benefited from dual monitor setups. I don't know if there's anything to that, but I asked my wife to try some dual monitors at the university, and she thought that was cool.

And it works well for her. She usually has like a word processor, email client, spread sheet and a web browser open, with some courseware app or another launched from the browser. And a game or whatnot. I think anybody who multitasks would find it useful.

11. what art software do you use?
I can see having all the tools in photoshop and illustrator being far away from the image being quite useful.

On the other hand, I wonder how my tablet would handle it...

14.  "xinerma-aware," - now I know what to call it !
.
.

And that's exactly one of my uses, all my PS tools on the small monitor and the whole large monitor for "playing" with my pics -

and just for fun, when I've got that last card for solitaire to win, I stretch the window all the way across the two monitors so I can watch the cards "unfold" from one screen to another !

and this is just an old Dell P1!

So that's why my screensavers, well only some of them take up both monitors. The 3-D screensavers only work offa the vid-card and Q71 monitor combination.

oh, while I'm here can one turn this "awareness" on/off ? - or is there no point.

15. yes, you can turn xinerama off
Edit the XF86Config file go to the Section "ServerLayout"
section, replace

Option "Xinerama" "on"

with

Option "Xinerama" "off"

(or delete the whole line).

But there is really no point; I'd stick with Xinerama.

7. I got a fantastic deal last year on a 21" monitor. . . .
It's a beast, but it has excellent color, and I can use 1280x1024 resolution and still read the thing as clearly as I could a lower resolution on a smaller monitor.

I actually got a Dell 21" monitor with a Trinitron tube for only $300 last year.

9. For the 1280x1024 users
Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 09:35 AM by Kellanved
1280 * 1024 is not a 4:3 resolution. Unless your monitor is specially constructed for that 5:4 ratio (many TFTs are), using it will compress the picture. Try out 1280*960 - it will produce a far better geometry on most screens.
A side benefit is that broader resolutions are less straining for the eyes - the reason why widescreen TV is better than "normal" TV.

:hi:

Edit:
You can check your screen geometry here: http://www.heise.de/ct/ctscreen/

Select "Geometrie". (Right-click and "Hauptmenü" to leave the program)

low side because at higher resolutions I have trouble reading the small print even with my 19-inch monitor - 1024 x 768.
