but I don't see it ever being economically realsitc to extract it. By the time our technology is good enough to do that, it will be more than good enough to provide alternative energies. Same thing goes for mining too, for the most part.
When I was down there getting two ships a year into McMurdo was about as much as we could handle; and icebergs make offshore prospect dicey to say the least. Drilling through more than 6.000 feet of moving ice would constantly break your drill string and any wellheads you might establish. There are many more obstacles to "developing" Antarctica's resources.
As an environemtalist (who used to be a petroleum geologist) I am glad that The Ice won't be expolited, and I'm not basing my hopes just on our good nature--but on nearly insurmountable practical considerations.

but i haven't heard much about the issue since the 1980s, i believe there was some limited exploration done at that time for "scientific" purposes of course since it is not supposed to be drilled?
