Does anybody else here NOT care about fashion or style?

Something must be wrong with me. I used to care. Even when I was poor - very poor - I would still try to keep up with fashion trends (related to clothes).

I don't look at the catalogs any more, I don't shop unless I am almost completely out of clothes with no holes in them, I don't really notice what people are wearing. I just do NOT care.

Maybe this is part of getting older. Shouldn't I care what I wear?

I think I'm having a reaction to my boss being fired... the boss that always tried to make me dress better.

8. I don't pay attention to what's in fashion

and I discovered a particularly silly looking one (read: incredibly stupid looking) when I went back to school this semester for the first time in 3+ years. It involves girls taking their bangs and clipping it back in such a way that it creates this strange lump on the front of their head. It looks utterly ridiculous and stupid, and yet because it's in style, they'll continue to do it. A few years from now they'll look back at a picture of themselves and say, "Wow, I looked really stupid! I mean, my head doesn't even look like it belongs on a human because that silly fashion made me do something that made my head appear misshapen and gross." But for now... they'll keep doing it. Because it's in fashion.

41. Interesting question, KC2. Nordstrom's is showing a retro look and now my closet

is coming back into fashion! My clothing is largely from consignment or thrift stores -- and I never stopped wearing shoulder pads.

Big bright prints
Black is the new Black
Shorter skirts
Sandals or flat heeled shoes
Sneakers in interesting colors

I'll be 69 in May 2008. COMFORTABLE and CLEAN are what I like.

46. The other impact is that Portland, Oregon is a LOT more casual than any other place I've ever lived!

Most days, I wear a dress with a bright print or plain colored blazer over it. I usually have a couple of gold rings on my fingers, a watch and a bracelet, plus some interesting necklace.

Sandals with pantihose if it's cold, or just panties and no socks.

It's "my look" and people think it's dressy because everyone else is in jeans or hooded sweats or other stuff.

To me, blue jeans are for cleaning the dog kennels or riding horses. Comes from my youth when Florida was much more rustic.

21. Strangely, I'm having the opposite reaction.

I spent the first 16 yrs or so since puberty either creating my own fashion, or just sticking with the basics: jeans, black shirts, skirts, and shoes; keds and white tshirts in the summer.
Now I'm actually starting to branch out into color and texture. It's a whole new world for me.
I always enjoy a classic look,however - I don't like to go too trendy no matter what. If I do get something 'trendy'; it's usually a small inexpensive acessory peice that I can easily switch out.
Also, I inherited some of my mother's jewelry, and everything old is new again. Love that.

I can understand where you are coming from, however. You are having style burn - out.

You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. You're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St. Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it's sort of comical to me how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. Believe it or not, it's quite possible to be nicely dressed and up-to-date without spending a ton of money or being obsessive about it. It means you need to have a basic idea of what flatters your body type (in both cut and color), and an eye for a bargain. I pick up a Lucky or InStyle about every other month to keep up with trends and get ideas for how to put outfits together (something Lucky is very good for, and at a cheaper price than other fashion mags). And I know where to shop (Target, Steve & Barry's, eBay, Santee Alley here in Los Angeles) to get the pieces I want. I have a very low clothes budget, do quite well on it, and manage to look nicely put together. It's not that difficult.

so I never worry about fashion or style at all.

I am really hard on my clothes though, so I tend to buy high quality items rather than fashionable things that will last a long time so I don't have to shop that often. I hate shopping. I worry secondarily about how they look, or how I will look in my clothes. I will spend $100 on a pair of running shoes for work that are incredibly sturdy and I do NOT care how they look or what color they are. Same thing with boots, jeans, tee shirts etc. Most of my clothing DOES have holes, stains and tears which doesn't fuss me a bit, and I'll wear them until they fall apart.

I'll admit to being a Goodwill shopper where I've gotten a lot of excellent quality clothes (not stylish or fashionable) that wears like iron.

but I do like to look nice when I go out or If I am at an important function. Some of the elements of the recent fashion trends are ok to me, but most are so beyond what I would wear that I just pick and choose what I like about it. The bottom line is if YOU dont feel comfortable in what you are in others will know that as well. Pick what you feel the most beautiful in and go with it.
