6. What are you trying to train?

Housebreaking? Basic manners? How old is the puppy?

Best tip for a young one...don't overdo. Start at 5 minutes at a time and work up slowly. Make it fun. Make it worthwhile...and that doesn't always mean food treats. Being allowed to play with a favorite toy or play a favorite game with you works well, too.

I was going to recommend the Monks at New Skete books as well. There are 2 - one more geared toward puppies. Both are excellent and I highly recommend them.

Best book I've ever read, by far, on training and UNDERSTANDING your dog.

That's the book I got when I got the 'puppy' who would grow to over 100 lbs. I ended up with
two sweet natured Dobermans which I attribute to the Monks. It doesn't matter what breed, this is
the one book every dog owner should read, imho.

9. We visited the place with our new German Shepherd puppy.

It was just a day trip from our then home in southern NH.
It's dog lover's heaven. Especially if you like Shepherds.

10. I didn't find one to be JUST right. The New Skete Monks were good, and so was Cesar Milan, but to

tell the truth the best advice I got was from Jon Katz about absolutely smothering the puppy in toys and treats so they'd have plenty of their owm stuff to chew on and not yours. He seemed to be very big on setting up your pup to succeed.

(There were also things I didn't like from all three of those sources.)
