Skeleton closets
I ran across this web site today from a member of another board: http://www.realchange.org/ It's about the skeleton closets that our candidates may have. Nothing too earth shattering there about Obama, Hillary & McCain. I did find it interesting though that McCain has a reputation as a womanizer and a hot head. It's so at odds with his public persona as a nice, soft-spoken, grandfatherly type.

I'll tell you guys something here. I could never successfully run for office. Here's why:

1. Dropped out of college, no wait, THREE times.

2. Convicted of disorderly conduct in 1993.

3. Convicted of criminal trespassing in 1998.

4. I inhaled...... and snorted and tripped and I still enjoy a good Heineken or six.

5. Started two businesses that each failed within 3 years.

6. I somehow had mortgages on two houses at once, each valued at around $100,000, at a time when I was making $35,000 a year. I never missed a payment, either, and I wasn't a landlord. We can call that one the Muddywater Scandal.

7. I've been diagnosed as having a mental illness.

8. And perhaps the most damning of them all- I smoke cigarettes.

Actually, now that I think about it, my skeleton closet sort of resembles George W. Bush's. There may yet be a future for me in politics. :P

3. Thanks man
I guess the whole point is that people make mistakes. Some of the candidates have admitted that and some have not. But I think that the main thing is: what are they going to do for us now? Yeah, you had your youthful indiscretions (and in the case of McCain his elderly indiscretions). We dig. We've been there. What are you going to do for us now?

4. As someone
who has relatives who actually personally knows a lot of politicians, I can say many of them have as many skeletons as you do. Or more. There is one politician (and I will not say who) serving in congress who apparantly tried to rape a good friend of my relatives. And yet, that has never been revealed publically.

We used to play a game called "What's my felony?" I have to admit that once you stop and think about it even the most mild mannered folks have some real amazing stories to tell.

You took the family car without permission? Congrats! That is Grand Theft Auto!!

You went in your buddies' house to wait for them to get home for an after hours party? WooHoo! That could be charged as a B&E!!!!!

You grabbed Dad's credit card and went to the mall? Gee, wait for it---could it have been prosecuted as retail theft? Deceptive Practices?

You would not believe the stories. Everything from drug trafficking to insurance fraud. My personal favorite was the guy that stole a freaking bulldozer!

Anyhow, my point here is that there are very few people who are completely clean for their entire lifetime. I always maintained I could never run for office because of all the pot I smoked in my mis- spent youth. Our local party chair asked me, "Did you ever sell any?" I had to tell the truth--EVERYBODY sold some at one time or another--and her response was "Great--if they bought from you then they'll buy from you again. You need to run!"

:)

Laura

Hey-did you end up with a cat? Last time I talked to you it was sounding like you had been adopted and you were in danger of becoming my hero for taking a stray kitty...

6. Yes we do
I've recently found out that the cat is considered the neighborhood kitty and people all over the place care for him. They feed him and the take him in when it's cold. The neighbors that said they were only going to take the one kitty turned out not to have any claim to either of them . They were both strays.

So I feed the little guy when he is crying. I'd love to take him in, but I've found that he is well cared for by the rest of the community. So, he's okay. I don't know that I could take him in anyway. He is somewhat afraid of me. Perhaps I remind him of a past abuser.

7. But do you wear an American flag lapel pin?
Apparently the Republicans think you can't be an American without one.

9. LOL!
Yes, the swift boating of Obama has already begun. When that is not effective we'll see how petty they can get. Personally I think McCain is a weak candidate and Obama will win the nomination. I don't think McCain has a chance in hell against Obama's charasmatic speeches and rallies. That doesn't mean that I like him, but I do think he is much better than McCain.

10. Come clean, brother!
No, you don't really have to, but it is great to get it off of your chest unlike some candidates that I will not name. It's a liberating experience.

11. Don't miss the bits on Nader.
The page on Nader has been around for years, of course, but it's worth mentioning that when push comes to shove, Nader is willing to throw ordinary people under the bus and yet still be a sanctimonious git.

12. My dear Droopy!
I have a good friend who ran for office, and he had some of the same skeletons as you...

He told his campaign people all about the stuff, and it never made any difference!

You should run!
