Ugh. Sick as a dog...
I have been for a week. I took 2 days off, went back, and if I were honest with myself, I would take Friday off. I have the PTO, but it does not distinguish between sick and vacation pay. If I were to take the day off, I would be risking my ability to get the hell out of dodge this summer.

There is truly something wrong with this country when there is no federal mandate for time of when a person is sick, or just in general. People should not have to fear losing their jobs just because they are sick. Being sick does not equal slacking off.

1. ...
 but not really a hug because I've been sick too and I don't want us to cross contaminate one another. Evidently we're in the peak of flu season and it's particularly bad this year. I don't have any classic respiratory flu symptoms but I've felt nauseated and incredibly fatigued all week -- like I could sleep constantly. Because I'm in my first year at my job I only get 4 days of PTO for the year. I'm really hesitant to take any time off but the quality and quantity of work I'm getting done is pretty fucking bad right now. I hate the combined sick/vacation thing. My employer "gives" us a short-term disability policy so to make up for it but it only kicks in for an illness over 3-days' duration and even then doesn't kick in until 3 days after you've gotten medical attention (so if you don't see the doctor until day 3 of your sickness it's not until day 6 that the policy kicks in). In other words, great if you get hit by a truck or have some catastrophic illness but you're screwed if you just get "regular" sick.

2. The great thing is...
The executives went to a convention in Vegas, and had to take 3 days off to recover from their exploits. They have an unlimited amount of time.

Funny, they are always talking about how "progressive" they are.

3. I'm really sorry you are sick. It bites the big one.
And your job's policy on sick days is one of the things that I am NOT proud to be an American about.
