Some pictures from a snowshoe hike in the Adirondacks near Lake Placid on Saturday
Wanted to share some pictures of a snowshoe climb that Mrs mtnsnake and I went on Saturday afternoon, outside of Lake Placid. The pictures are taken from Mt Jo, a smaller mountain nestled in the High Peaks area of the Adirondacks. This is what we often do on the weekends in the North Country, is hike up different mountains in the beautiful Adirondacks. Make sure to check out the peace symbol in one of the pictures below.

Captions are below each shot.

Approaching the summit

View of Algonquin Peak, the 2nd highest peak in NY. It's the whitest snowcap in the image, and is a little hard to see because the lighting and visibility weren't too good that day. Mt Marcy would be to the left, but it was in the clouds that day and not visible. Heart Lake is in the foreground.

The white-capped highest peak toward the upper right of the picture above is Algonquin Peak. My avatar was taken on top of Algonquin several years ago, and yes, that is me that you see in the avatar doing that silly pose.

View towards Keene Valley

Some mystical rays

Check out the peace symbol and the heart made earlier by some cross country skiers who were crossing the frozen lake below. The lake is a long ways away, so I had to zoom in on it.

My best buddy and fellow hiker, Mrs mtnsnake. I can't believe she's put up with me for over 3 decades. Yikes!

Yours truly "poping". I love doing that on top of each mountain. You just throw your arms up at an angle and rest your head right back onto the top of your back as you look at the sky, and ahhhh, it feels so good. Try it next time you're out and looking up at the sun. Most relaxing thing ever.

Headed back down. You can see Mrs mtnsnake snaking her way down the trail at the bottom part of the picture.

5. Cool!
Glad you enjoyed the shots.

Nothing like the Adirondack's!!

Ain't that the truth.

North Creek is a great place. Lots of great scenery and not too far from Lake George. Nice. I'm more than a two hour drive north of North Creek, but I've been through there many times.

2. Gorgeous country! I lived in North Lawrence in 1984 and 85.
I never tried snowshoeing. You make it look not only possible, but almost easy. Your pictures bring back many memories.

6. I'm very familiar with North Lawrence and not all that far from there

I always get N. Lawrence and Lawrenceville mixed up, though. lol

I've fished the Deer River several times which flows through North Lawrence. Nice area.

I never tried snowshoeing. You make it look not only possible, but almost easy.

Snowshoeing is pretty easy. You can pretty much snowshoe anywhere that you can walk. The hardest thing is just getting up those darn mountains...but in an aerobic sense mostly. Actually it's really fun making your way up. The more popular trails stay fairly packed in mid-winter, so it's not that hard to go. Preparations are always vitally important though, especially in winter and if we're doing a longer hike.

14. I'm curious. Since you're familiar with the area, have you ever
eaten at Jon's in Malone? I lived in Malone for a short while too and had breakfast at Jon's. He had the best tasting coffee I ever drank.

19. I sure have, many times
Jon's is the place right on the corner of their main intersection. I've never had breakfast there, only lunch when I'm in the Malone area doing business. Good place to eat, and it's got that nice part with all the bakery things in it on the way out. Yum!

8. Elizabethtown is in a gorgeous area
There's an interesting mountain with a fire tower in that area named Poke-O-Moonshine Mountain that we've climbed before. I think Poke-O-Moonshine is one of the best names for a mountain ever.

10. Thanks
Each mountain is so different. Some are big, some small, but all a challenge, and it's fun to get away from it all and into the woods any time of year.

16. You are so lucky to live in Saranac Lake. That is such a cool town
and nestled in such a beautiful area. Cooooold country. It's amazing how so few people realize that Saranac Lake is often the cold spot in the country. MSM almost never points that out.

Do you hike? We've hiked Baker Mtn in Saranac Lake many times. Great little mountain with some splendid views and always a good workout.

Yeah, that would be fun to meet up sometime. Maybe get a couple slices of pizza at that good little place, The Owls Nest I think it's called?

T'is true, we are often the coldest spot... but you can used to it.

Yes, though a bit more of a summer hiker. I have been to all of the local spots at one time or another.

Yes, The Owl's Nest is still around and anytime you'd like to meet up, just let me know.

13. That is some stunning scenery. It is very similar to the terrain where I live.
Three decades with Mrs. Mtnsnake? She looks like a teen-ager :)

Thanks for sharing. Truly beautiful. There is nothing like the wildnerness and the mountains.

18. Good to see you, Straight Shooter
Yup, more than 3 decades with her, and yes, she looks too darn young for her age, darn it! I guess that's a good thing, though :)

Glad you liked the pictures, and you are right that there is nothing like the wilderness and the mountains. I always say that if you can't get away from it all and do what you like, then nothing means anything.

Thanks for stopping by, SS. Sometime take some shots of your area in those splendid mountains where you live out West and drop them by us. :)
