"Oh Canada"
Although I would not trade the American national anthem for "Oh Canada" I do like the Canadian national anthem. In the last few days I had the ability to hear the Canadian national anthem and I think it is a nice song. I especially like the part "we stand on guard for thee".

As national anthems go, it's very nice.

5. That's not a bad idea.
The ring tone on my cell is the default one...and it's too cutesy sounding for words.

8. Growing up in Canada, I never really liked 'O Canada'
I always thought 'The Star Spangled Banner' was so much nicer! O Canada seemed boring to me and didn't have enough oomph to it. Funny how things change though. I do like it now.

10. Really?
I always thought we had a substandard anthem.

La Marseillaise -- now there's an anthem.

12. I'm guessing that's the French nat'l anthem?
My first exposure to that one was the performance in Casablanca.

Now that is one KICKASS anthem.

29. 'La Marseillaise' is a rousing tune, indeed
But did you ever check out the lyrics? And you thought ours was violent. :scared:

Arise children of the motherland,
Our day of glory has arrived!
Over us, the bloodstained banner
Of tyranny holds sway!
Oh, do you hear there in our fields
The roar of these ferocious soldiers?
Who came right here in our midst
To slaughter our sons and wives

To arms, oh citizens!
Form up in serried ranks!
March on, march on!
May their impure blood
Flow in our fields!

Supreme devotion to our Motherland
Guides and sustains avenging hands!
Liberty, oh dearest Liberty
Come fight with your shielding bands!
Beneath our banner come, oh victory
Answer your soul-stirring cry!
Oh come, come see your foes now die
Witness your pride and our glory!

(chorus)

Into the fight we too shall enter
When our fathers are dead and gone
We shall find their bones laid down to rest
With the fame of their glories won
Oh, to survive them care we not
Glad are we to share their grave
Great honor is to be our lot
To follow or to venge our brave

(chorus)

19. They changed the words when I was a kid
Now I always get confused and start singing it wrong. The French version of Oh Canada is pretty cool too. Of course, I can't remember the words to that either.

20. Why is the English version different than the French version?
Shouldn't they be (as close as possible) literal translations of the other?

Official (English)
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits;
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

Translation of French lyrics<2>

O Canada! Land of our forefathers
Thy brow is wreathed with a glorious garland of flowers.
As in thy arm ready to wield the sword,
So also is it ready to carry the cross.
Thy history is an epic of the most brilliant exploits.
Thy valour steeped in faith
Will protect our homes and our rights
Will protect our homes and our rights.

21. It's a beautiful song
It's what a national anthem should be, lyrically and melodically.

I'd trade it for that nonsensical, unsingable crap that's our national anthem in about a nanosecond, and I'd throw in a set of dishes.

26. Problem is, Canada is NOT "our home and native land" - we are mostly invaders and immigrants.
.
.
.

The REAL natives are still fighting to keep a little piece of what was all theirs.

So I find no pride in being a white man in someone else's nation.

But I do prefer our "National Anthem" to that of the USA's.

But that's just from a musical point of view.
