I am trying to cook a casserole by putting the pan on the lowest rack and setting the oven to broil.

Why? Because somewhere between last night and tonight my oven decided that it doesn't work. For half an hour I left that casserole sitting in a cold oven thinking it was cooking. Thank God there didn't seem to be any gas coming out all that time. (At least, I can't smell any and we haven't gone :nuke: yet...)

Oven was already stupid because if you set it to anything over 275 it thought it was set to 500. Now it won't go at all. *grumble grumble* And of course we have no money to replace it or get it fixed. The microwave was first in line for being replaced. *more grumbling*

Anyway, thanks for hearing out my rant. :) I have to go to the kitchen now and see if the casserole is kinda sorta cooking at all.

that happened at my parent's house on Thanksgiving one year

we had to cook the turkey in the neighbor's oven.


Appliances can be such a pain.

If you crock pot the casserole minus the biscuit topping, you can make biscuits (under the broiler??) to top it off...broil on bottom or next to bottom rack, until brown, then flip over and do same to cook all the way through...maybe???

6. Try putting something between the flame and the casserole

Like if you have a 2nd shelf, put a couple baking/cookie sheets on it, to prevent any direct heat from hitting the top of the caserrole, and distributing the heat more -- makeshift oven if you will
