Smoke is NOT supposed to come out of the computer, right?

Had what looked like a total OS failure late last night. No Safeboot, no system restore. That's when I smelled the smoke. You know, that "burning wires" smell. In my haste to pull it out from the under desk shelf to unplug it, I knocked it over on it's front, cracking the case.

Meh, it was time for an upgrade anyway, right?

12. Had a puff of smoke come from my imac at work. Bad logic board, $700 repair.

Almost a month before I got the thing back, because AppleCare took their time in approving the repair.

Macs aren't magically immune to hardware failures. Hell, anymore it's almost all the same hardware, in a prettier case.

Then I gotta figure out how I'm going to get all the shit off my old HD.

17. You could install the old HD in the new case

and copy it that way, it's pretty fast. Unless, maybe the old HD was the source of the smoke, in which case you can restore from your most recent backup.

18. No. There was some kind of weird "power surge"

Knocked out my cable and internet, as well as the electricity in one room. Didn't trip a fuse, though, and my bigtime surge suppressor didn't trip. That was the end of it, though.
