Who is the better guitarist,Jimmy Page or Jimmie Hendrex?

1. Jimi Hendrix is better.
But "Stairway" does have a nice solo. I think the best LZ solo, though, is on "In the Evening," which really isn't much of a song. Killer solo, though.

2. ok, assuming you mean "Hendrix", and there isn't someone else with a similar name..
Hendrix all the way. The man was absolutely brilliant. The things he did in music transcended style, where-as Led Zeppelin only ever created or refined a style. Jimmy Hendrix. Hands down. Amazing.

3. Page (but only within LZ)
I have never been very impressed with his work outside of LZ, which tells me that the whole was greater than the sum of its parts and that RP, JPJ, and JB had a huge influence on how tjhey supported his sound. And Page has never been a very good live performer for whatever reason.

But for me, within the confines of LZ, he's my favorite. It's just a matter of taste or lack thereof perhaps.

18. John Paul Jones is the uncredited genius behind Zeppelin, imo
along with Bonham. Don't get me wrong, all four of them were amazing together, but Jones seldom gets credit or respect for being a very ahead of his time bass player, not to mention all of the other instruments he played in the studio from keys to guitar.

20. Truth. JPJ wrote "Black Dog"...
Easily one of Zep's most complex songs.

I like his playing more than Plant's sometimes whiny voice. Unfortunately JPJ never got much recognition.

21. yeah, I'd say that he's easily my first real influence on bass
I liked some other stuff before him, mainly McCartney's infectious bass hooks and the Ox's jaw-dropping busy yet tasteful lines for The Who, and quite a few other things, but JPJ was the first person who really made me really want to play bass instead of doing it by default.

So, Hendrix. At least he gave Dylan credit.

11. Exactly. Jimi played lead, rhythm (often simultaneously), he sings...
and is an extraordinary stage presence. Page doesn't compare.

33. Page can barely play lead live.
He's an absolute slopfest live, and that's why Zep has so little live material released.

Even the stuff they do release has some pretty glaring mistakes on his part.

Heroin is a hell of a drug.

10. Gotta go with Jimi, BUT:
If somehow both could come back to life for a week. If their sole mission were to practice up and participate in a judged competition which included some of the best guitarists of today...I wouldn't bet on either. Sure the styles were different between the two icons of guitar history but let's add an entirely different style: Stephen Colbert! Yeah, see what I mean? No contest!

(with a shout-out to Randy Hanson: "...dude, NOBODY and I do mean NOBODY does Jimi like you do...perhaps some day you could go up against the great Colbert and prove my point!)

Not ODing is a key component of Page's style, which he uses to great advantage.

How do we determine the standard to which they are to adhere? What is the criteria to make the judgement? Is Stevie Ray Vaughn in this mix too? :)
I like them both, but prefer Jimi's style........

16. I used to say Page even though I love both a lot
but I think Hendrix is actually a better player by far now. He gets noticed for his antics, but he was actually a really solid and innovative guitar player whereas Page is kinda sloppy in comparison.

Hendrix is by far the better of the two.

Page ranks up there, but is on a different level than Jimi.

26. Hendrix has chunks of guys like Jimmy Page in his stool

YES, I ripped off Sting and Phil Hartman (SNL):

The Sinatra Group

Frank Sinatra.....Phil Hartman
Sinead O'Connor.....Jan Hooks
Billy Idol.....Sting
Luther Campbell.....Chris Rock
Steve Lawrence.....Mike Myers
Eydie Gorme.....Victoria Jackson

http://snltranscripts.jt.org/90/90ksinatra.phtml

Billy Idol: I think you're a bloody, stupid old fart!

Frank Sinatra: You're all talk, blondie! You want a piece of me? I'm right here!

Billy Idol: Don't provoke me, old man.

Frank Sinatra: You don't scare me. I've got chunks of guys like you in my stool!

Billy Idol: Alright, I'll rip your bloody head off.

Frank Sinatra: Steve, go kick his ass.

Steve Lawrence: What?

Frank Sinatra: You heard me!

Eydie Gorme: Do it, Steve!

Steve Lawrence: Huh? Well.. okay..

Everyone plays differently, and has strengths and weaknesses that are particular to their style.

But in this case, I'll make an exception. Jimi.

42. My feelings about spelling are the following...
...If you truly love an artist, his/her name is tattooed on yer brain, so you don't misspell it. If you spell Jimi Hendrix "Jimmie Hendrex," you're either taking the piss or you're not a die-hard fan. Having said that, Jimmy and Jimi are my two favorite guitarists, and Page himself would probably be the first to say that Hendrix was the best there ever was. BUT. Hendrix never put together a band like Led Zeppelin, and Page did. What Page got from Bonham, Jones and Plant was a gift from the gods, and if you've ever heard Page on recordings from the '73 European tour, you have heard the ULTIMATE in rock guitar playing, because that quartet, at that time, was on fire and will never be duplicated. Ever.
