1. Get him a Macbook or an iMac.
Even the entry-level machine in both lines will have plenty of power for day-to-day stuff.

I think the base configurations all come with at least 1GB of RAM, but if he's likely to use several apps at once you may want to up that.

5. I have an iMac and I love it.
With the iMac everything comes in the box so you are good to go. I would suggest getting as much RAM as you can. Don't buy RAM from Apple. It takes a few minutes to install and is much cheaper at a place like : http://crucial.com/ <--that is where I got my RAM.

6. I've only owned macs
got my first computer in 93 and it was a laptop. gave it away to someone. it was still working, never had a problem. still have my old clamshell and it still works. never had a problem. had an iMac, first one, and gave it to goodwill. it was still working but needed more memory. have an old g3 tower and it still works. never had a problem, except with trying to run virtual pc. my son uses it now to make videos b/c it has a big screen. now have a powerbook g4 and have not had any problems.

have never had a worm or virus that I know of.

my older son got a dell as a present and it causes him constant trouble. To me the price diff. is worth it - I keep computers as long as I can. the only reason I got this new laptop is because I had to be able to run os x. even so, macs have higher resale value than pcs, so if you trade up a lot, it's still a better deal. this son was using the iMac until I gave it away and he got his own laptop.

so I would say that you could easily get a used mac, depending on what your dad does, and it would be good.

9. The only things I would add to this thread are...
...consider your father's eyesight when deciding which model to buy. I have always bought Macs but I have never bought one of the Mac laptops, because to my eyes the screens are not bright enough and are not as easy to read as the desktop Macs with their brighter screens. I would recommend that you take your father to an Apple store and have him sit down at several models and see which one he likes best. If cost is a factor, and he has an older PC with a keyboard and VGA monitor, you may be able to use a Mac Mini, which can use that monitor and any USB devices which have Mac drivers. That is an inexpensive way to get into Mac if you have older USB periperals such as printers and scanners, and a VGA monitor. (The USB peripherals must have Mac software available with them). Also, if you want to be able to burn DVDs, buy a Mac with a SuperDrive. The Macs with the Combo Drives can burn CDs but not DVDs.
