5. I met her briefly in Kepler's Books, Menlo Park...
...Around ten to twelve years ago. She "was" a regular at the time, I'm not sure if she still is.

I was with my girlfriend at the time, browsing the books, and she came walking in with a big smile. One of the employees spotted her and said "Hi, Joan," and when she walked by me, I said "YES! HI, Joan!" and I got a smile to call my own...from Joan.

:-)

I'd first seen her in 1975, when she was a "celebrity walk-on guest" at Emmylou Harris' concert at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos, CA. I had front row seats that night, and in the Circle Star it meant that I was about ten feet from the edge of the revolving stage.

She's like Bob, she's like Woody & Pete, she's like a precious few from the era who have carved a special and permanent place in the music of our country. I like Joan. I hope wherever she is this year and whatever she's doing, she's having the time of her life.

7. I used to really like "I Love It When You Call Me Names"...
I just wanna see you at night
Don't come round my house in the day
I love it when we start up a fight
And I love it when the fight ends your way

I love it when you call me names

I can't wait to see you again
I know you're gonna slap my face
you beat me up then beat me again
and over and over and over and over
And over and over

I love it when you call me names

Big woman
And a short short man
And he loves it
When she beats his brains out
He's pecked to death
But he loves the pain
And he loves it
When she calls him names

She's wearing heavy leather with lace
He dresses up in cowboy taste
They punish then they think up a crime
It's their way of loving not mine

I love it when you call me names

10. "Diamonds and Rust" by Joan Baez
Edited on Fri Dec-28-07 07:10 PM by SCRUBDASHRUB

DIAMONDS AND RUST
(Words and Music by Joan Baez)

Well I'll be damned
Here comes your ghost again
But that's not unusual
It's just that the moon is full
And you happened to call
And here I sit
Hand on the telephone
Hearing a voice I'd known
A couple of light years ago
Heading straight for a fall

As I remember your eyes
Were bluer than robin's eggs
My poetry was lousy you said
Where are you calling from?
A booth in the midwest
Ten years ago
I bought you some cufflinks
You brought me something
We both know what memories can bring
They bring diamonds and rust

Well you burst on the scene
Already a legend
The unwashed phenomenon
The original vagabond
You strayed into my arms
And there you stayed
Temporarily lost at sea
The Madonna was yours for free
Yes the girl on the half-shell
Would keep you unharmed

Now I see you standing
With brown leaves falling around
And snow in your hair
Now you're smiling out the window
Of that crummy hotel
Over Washington Square
Our breath comes out white clouds
Mingles and hangs in the air
Speaking strictly for me
We both could have died then and there

Now you're telling me
You're not nostalgic
Then give me another word for it
You who are so good with words
And at keeping things vague
Because I need some of that vagueness now
It's all come back too clearly
Yes I loved you dearly
And if you're offering me diamonds and rust
I've already paid
