1. "Shall We Dance?"....the excellent Japanese film from 1996...
not that American cinema rip-off, lame, staring the bimbo of the day
attempt to remake a really good movie.

5. Which of the Zatoichi movies? ;)
There were quite a few of them. "The Blind Swordsman" was great in all of them, though :)

18. Ikiru
I believe it means "existence" in Japanese. I think it's Kurosawa's best film. I saw it in 1968 on French TV while I was spending a year over there. I found it extremely moving.

20. Duh....

This and Seven Samurai were both made by Toho at the same time in '54, and both finished in the top 10 for the year and helped keep the company alive. Ishiro Honda, the director of Godzilla, learned from Kurosawa in previous movies before Seven Samurai.

24. I saw this one for the first time this summer...with full orchestra..
If you haven't seen it, it is worth the time. Especially if a local film club is reviving it on a big screen. Remember when you do that a lot of those shots, and editing had never been done befor

..Angry Amish.........great choice....

23. Dersu Uzala (The Hunter)
Quite a remarkable film from Akiro Kurisawa.

Also, a B&W obscure Japanese film called "Woman of the Dunes" -- supposedly erotic, although I was more interested with the story than the alleged eroticism.

25. Tampopo
From Wiki:

Tampopo begins when a pair of truck drivers, an experienced one named Goro and a young one named Gun (played by Tsutomu Yamazaki and Ken Watanabe respectively), happen onto a decrepit roadside fast food stop selling ramen noodles. The business is not doing too well, and after getting involved in a fight, the heroes decide to help the young owner, Tampopo ("Dandelion", played by Nobuko Miyamoto), turn her establishment into a paragon of the "art of noodle soup making".

The main narrative is interspersed with stories involving consumables on several levels. The primary subplot involves a white-suited yakuza gangster (Koji Yakusho) and his mistress (Fukumi Kuroda), who find eyebrow-raising new ways to use food. Other satirical vignettes involve an office intern who upstages his senior colleagues by ordering in fluent French at a gourmet restaurant, a housewife who rises from her deathbed to cook one last meal for her family, and a women's etiquette class learning how to eat spaghetti in the gaijin way.

Nothing against the classics, but this is my favorite.

30. I voted for Seven Samurai
but recently saw a Korean film in the vein of "Crouching Tiger..." that easily outdid "Crouching Tiger..."

My sister had it on loan from a friend, and none of us know the actual title... :(
