1. Depp was good in the recent movie, but....
Wilder and the original movie is always going to be the classic version, even if it did take more liberties off from the novel.

2. Gene Wilder, way!!
I like Johnny Depp, but that wasn't a movie to remake, like Steve Martin in The Pink Panther.

8. I agree Montanto, about this movie and the Pink Panther
I can't believe Steve Martin agreed to it.

4. I liked how the Depp version was more true to the real story.
I liked Depp's portrayal a TON and I liked Charlie and grandpa in the new version better. I HATED the original Charlie and his stupid grandpa.

However, the oompa loompas in the first were far superior.

6. To be true to the source, you'd have to go with a more racist depiction of Oompa Loopas
They were minstrel-like caractitures of African pygmies in the book's illustrations. Somethings are better updated.

But I agree, Depp was more fun to watch. Even as a kid I got the impression that Wilder's Wonka was just a Wizard of Oz wanna be.

5. Gene Wilder
I just like the original so much better. They couldn't improve on Veruca Salt singing "I Want It NOW".

7. The Johnny Depp version was more accurate from what I've heard.
But the Gene Wilder version was rather fun.

9. You need another option for "I like them both"
Wilder and Depp had their strengths and weaknesses. Both of them know how to do crazy, just in different nuances.

10. The original movie sucked so much that Roald Dahl dissed it
Sure, Depp came across a little bit creepy but it was nice to see Burton pretty much stick with the book.

BTW, the Burton/Depp movie was NOT a remake of the Wilder movie. Both movies were based on the same book but that was about it.

11. Apples and oranges.
I like apples and oranges. I also liked both Wonkas, for different reasons. The Gene Wilder version is the one I grew up with, and I love the way he played it, but the movie took liberties with the book. The Depp-Wonka is stranger and creepier, almost unlikable, in comparison, but his performance and the rest of the movie are a better representation of the book (except for the dentist-father embellishment, which had more to do with Burton giving Christopher Lee screen time in another of his movies, I think). Anyway, I like them both and can't really say I like one more than the other.
