Something new I learned on DU today: Actresses are paid not to have cellulite.
Actors, on the other hand, like Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Jack Black, John C. Reilly, and William Peterson, are paid to act.

Women really need to learn their freakin' place.

:sarcasm:

2. You're freaking out a lot about this.
I'm sorry if the state of Hollywood in 2007 (or 1997, or 1987, or 1977, or back to silent films) is such that actresses are judged by their looks. Heh. Did you just wake up from being cryogenically frozen since the 1600's?

3. I'm not quite sure what Jack Black does in movies....
Edited on Fri Dec-14-07 03:36 PM by terrya
I wouldn't necessarily call it "acting"

Not that I hate him or anything.

But I agree...you read the most ridiculous bullshit around here.

6. I think it depends on the actress/movie.
Example, Demi Moore in Striptease. Paid to be thin and act. I know, bad example. An actress like JLH, IIRC, is given the role of the "hot girl" or cheerleader or pretty dodo. Part of it is looking the part. Other actesses, I think it matter less how they look, and more how they act.

It is somewhat the same for me. C'mon...Tom Cruise? If he got fat, nobody would watch him anymore. Johnny Depp might be a toss up, as he can act well. Where would Ahnold be today if he had to rely on acting in the beginning and he wasn't Mr. Olympia? Chris Farley got paid to be fat. Half his schtick was being fat.

I just think it depends on the role and the person acting it.

9. Exactly.
Would George Clooney get the Batman roll had he been 50 pounds overweight? Probably not. Actors and actresses have to fit the part and if you're perceived as being sexy, you'll need to stay sexy. Male or female, it really doesn't matter.

Look at Kathy Bates, far from being the perfect body, yet she has had some great roles.

12. So you would have posted in a Jeff Bridges bathing suit thread
that "Actors are paid to not have cellulite"?

13. Hmm. Well, Jeff Bridges can actually act his way out of a paper bag.
Unlike JLH, and he also doesn't get cast in bimbo cheerleader roles. So, no.

Would it help if I had said "Starlets are paid not to have cellulite"?

16. So anyone you think can act is allowed to have cellulite and get paid?
OK... now I'm clear on the whole thing.

7. Not that this is a new prejudice, but you're right that
it's getting absolutely disgusting amounts of support. You'd think that more people here could see and disect such an obviously sexist double standard.
