Poll question: In what type of dwelling do you live?
There was a post here earlier on surviving depression and one of the suggestions was to keep your own chickens. I was just wondering if that was really an option for a large number of DU'ers

1. How about single family home on a 4600 sq ft lot.

9. That's option two, under an acre.
An acre is about 43500 SF.

I have a 28,000 SF lot (two thirds of an acre.)Zoning allows us to have chickens and goats and sometimes I'm sorely tempted. There are chicken coops in the yards of some of our neighbors who have lived her since the 1960s.

17. Oh I know...but having a 2200 sq ft house on a 4600 sq ft lot is kind of unique.

19. Only if it's a ranch.
Edited on Sun Nov-25-07 05:51 PM by Gormy Cuss
There are lots of good size two story houses on .10 acre lots around here (new construction)and figuring in the SF of 2 or 3 car garages and driveways there's little soft surface left. On the other hand, I remember small ranch houses on .10 acre lots where I grew up and they had enough room for a garden because there was no garage, only driveway parking.

36. We mow our own.
But about 1/3 of the lot is actually concrete, so it takes only 5 minutes or so.

2. I live in a small condo with very little green space
And chickens would not go over well with the association. Even a cat is supposed to be on a leash when it's outside.

The only person I know who successfully could do it. I tried with mine; they go crazy.

3. I myself live in a garden-style condo
I can have a few tulips and a tomato plant or two in the summer, but chickens wouldn't be allowed.

It seems that when times are bad there are some people with more options than others. Something to remember as we go through life, I guess.

Befriend a family who can keep chickens.

4. They call them "garden homes".
Small home, small suburban lot. I suppose I COULD keep chickens, but I'd have to bribe my neighbors with fresh eggs. :D

Although I do have a small deck in back. I don't know how well chickens would go over in Noe Valley, though. Maybe my 'tiels would suffice?

I have no chickens, but I try to grow a few tomatoes during the summer. The person who lived here before me had chickens and a horse. I prefer my two dogs.

15. We own a duplex, and live in half.
It takes up most of the lot, but I do have a 300-square-foot vegetable garden which takes up most of the back yard. I don't think we're supposed to have chickens in town.

Great, racially mixed, middle class neighborhood, and it's QUIET! Unlike my previous condo, no yard, noisy upstairs neighbors.

23. Single family rural w/ at least 1 acre
In Victorian times it wasn't unusual for townspeople to keep chickens in their backyards. Chickens don't need a lot of room.

More recently, Gordan Ramsey, that hot headed Scots chef, has keep piggies and turkeys in his backyard.

29. Single family home, 5 acres and had chickens until.....
predators came and killed them all. Didn't replace them because I was a little paranoid of the Bird Flu, and of course the killing was a traumatic experience. We would have to modify their hen house if we were to get a new flock. The last time the predators just dug underneath the pen and squeezed through the door of the roosting shed. It was very upsetting.

The eggs were great! Because ours were free range they ate what they are suppose to -- grain, but also bugs and stuff. The yokes were very orange -- almost red, and they cooked up very fluffy.

I have studied the peak oil depression stuff, and I feel like our property may be able to sustain us through some rough periods. Our home is small and is quite easy to heat. We can plant a large garden and although I haven't canned or preserved anything this year, I have in the past and I can do it again.

I do believe that hard times are coming and being prepared is wise.
