I always leave "puppy pads" down in case I'm not home when nature calls the beagle. I also place them under the litter boxes because Shadow has a habit of overshooting the mark. But it's bothered me that they're ending up in landfills.

I've found two solutions! A) Washable puppy pads...http://www.discountpads.com/

or B) Biodegradeable puppy pads...http://www.simplesolution.com/products_us/natural.html

I've ordered a package of the biodegradeable ones.

What eco-friendly ideas are you using around the house?

2. I use cfls, but the reusuable cloths on a swiffer are a great idea.
I've stopped using the swiffer wetjet spray, and just use vinegar instead. I use vinegar as a cleaner most of the time...it's completely non-toxic.

3. Crate training is the best way to potty train
Someone has to be available to get puppy outside to do his business often though, so if he has to be alone all day, and you can't zip home at the lunch hour for a potty break that would be a problem.

If one has no alternative but to paper train, what the heck is wrong with newspaper? I don't get why people need special pads for puppies to mess on.

Still, I'd avoid paper training at all costs even if you have to pay a neighbor to take the puppy out for a bathroom break if you can't do it yourself. Crate training teaches the dog that there are no circumstances where messing indoors is ok. Paper training teaches the dog that messing indoors is ok under certain conditions, except they tend to go by their own set of conditions... like it's ok to go in the same area as their indoor bathroom used to be whether there's a pad or newspaper there or not even though they may only do that if they really don't want to hold it.
