I'm going to be collecting bad manners today.
I expect it'll be the bright side of working in retail. The store I work in has clothes and gifts (pretty cool junk, I must admit). But when I see a customer kicking another customer's walking stick out from under her, I'll be in the fitting room recording it. Or someone throwing a tantrum over cheap animal-fat candles we sell. It's a way to amuse myself. 2 days ago I wrote down how many versions of "Little Drummer Boy" we were forced to hear. There were fifteen.

I will report back with said list when I get home from work tonight. I'm leaving in an hour. Meanwhile, I'd really dig your horror stories. Tis the season.:patriot:

1. 15?
I thought it was just me...

I clean a building that has been playing xmas music since Halloween. There are a damned lot of versions of that song. Maybe people think that when they perform it live 'for rumpa bum bum' won't be too hard to remember when they are up on stage drunk or something...

2. We'd have maybe a twenty-minute respite before hearing the song again.
The longest was an hour. At the end of the day, we were ready to tear our hair out. Customers around us were humming along to it. :banghead:

25. It makes me cringe.
Every time I hear it. Maybe I need an excorcism.

26. "Could there be a God that would allow a song like this to exist?"
I say not...

3. Please allow The Wiley and Excellent Boy Cat Named Ginger contribute to your collection.
I just gave him 70 grams of Almo Nature roast beef an hour ago. Ten minutes ago, I snuggled him on his pillow, and he released the most deadly, flatulent expression of "gratitude" known to humanity. Perhaps you'll want to try that one on your ungrateful customers. Ginger and I attest: it works. :scared:

5. OMG, that is too cute.
 Little Sophie still hasn't let one yet, and I've had her 4 and a half years. Maybe she's saving it up!

Yes, today I'm pretty positive about a lot of short fuses. I daresay I'll try to keep my cool. It seems the only real stress release during such a time is to write it down.

4. hope you encounter some nice and kind folks today
who make your day more pleasant.

But yes, the evil bastids are always out there. Why people think it's ok to act like assholes to the folks working in a store is beyond me. There's never a reason not to be courteous!

6. Hey, thank you, beautiful!
:hi: Some of the regulars are really great people. I'm getting the impression it's all about to go nuts because of today. People have been appearing more and more tense. You're speaking to the "before" version of me right now. I'm interested in seeing how coherently the "after" me types tonight.

9. Would it be copyright infringement for a store to dress up their security
like Droogs? How about if they beat unruly customers with their walking sticks?

11. I have GOT to see that movie again.
OMG! And *pft* no one who comes into our store'll ever have heard of it.

So, I think it's safe. Actually, my proposal would be trap doors outfitted all over the floors & easily accessible by remote.:D

12. I think this is a cool idea
You could choose a different subject each day - Little Drummer Boy one day, rudeness another day, ridiculous requests another day, strange purchase combos another day and so on. Then, combine it all into one hilarious essay. Surely someone would want to publish that. I can't way to see your report!

19. Aah, now I'm blushing
YOU were the one that started it! Too bad (that doesn't sound right) that the people were all nice today. I'm surprised you weren't busy. I didn't shop at all, but I went to the movies. You can take a little poetic license as far as what happened when in your essay. Keep us posted!

21. You also had some posts in GD that were brilliant.
Your tenacity was a wonderful thing to behold. I'm going to do the "rude thread" some time in the near future, and go on to the other subjects as time goes on. I will certainly keep you posted.

15. OMG!! Those freaking SWEETHEARTS today made a total liar out of me.

OK, it was like this: the store was NOT very busy today and practically deserted tonight. The women who came in to shop were extraordinarily patient, sweet & courteous.

What happened may be that everyone in town was terrified of going out today and are saving it all for tomorrow.

There have been much, much worse days.

Cheers, y'all.:toast:

16. I hate to say it, but save 'Rudeness Collection Day' for oh, say December 22
Desperation oozes from the pores like sweat. Tempers aren't short, they will have expired by the 20th. If you can keep an objective distance, it's really rather amusing.

Which is how I went through 4 Christmas seasons at Barnes & Noble. That, and collecting versions of "Baby It's Cold Outside" on the satellite musak system (lots and lots).

Meanwhile, glad you had a peaceful day, Sugie. :pals:

:hi:

22. That "satellite musak system" has some explaining to do.
I'll heed your advice and keep plenty of paper handy for the lists. Yesterday, I wrote down the first and only instance of rudeness and then was stumped when the rude woman turned out to show humanity & sweetness. It was like, "What the..."

And it's not like I wasn't vigilant, either. I'd heard the horror stories and experienced a few dozen of my own in the past.

You're something else, Richardo. Thank you for this. :yourock:

20. Fuck retail..been there, done that
You must REALLY want to kick someone's ass there, come on...I've felt like doing it countless times. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to jump out from behind the counter and beat customers over the head with a wooden hanger ( the kind they like to take home from the display racks...those ).

Just get out there and BEAT somebody, Sugar Smack!! If not for yourself, then for me! Geez, customers suck ass...they are the only reason I hate the holidays anymore.....

24. We hoodlums must stick together.
Believe me, I went in there with my dukes up. There'll be plenty of opportunities in the future to use them, but yesterday was an aberration. You're like the devil-in-my-ear, TK421.

I'm not in retail for the long haul (as anyone in retail will tell you about themselves) but I'm getting a lot of "inspiration" from it.

:D
