I'm so glad I drilled all these with my daughter growing up. She spent the day with her BF's family and had a "smart uncle" trying to stump her. She got busted on a few, but she got him and he was old! lol

jest sayin...

As I was going to St. Ives

I met a man with seven wives
And every wife had seven sacks
And every sack had seven cats
And every cat had seven kits
Kits, cats, sacks, wives
How many were going to St Ives?

20. dunno
"I" was going to St Ives, so that's one.

It isn't really clear if the man with the wives was also going to, or possibly coming from St Ives. Or maybe they met at a crossroad, and the man, wives, sacks, cat,s kits were neither going to nor coming from St Ives.

Having said that:
2,301 kits
343 cats
49 sacks
7 wives
1 man
and I

so the maximum number could be as high as 2,310. Unless there are others, not met, so not mentioned. Quite the quandary.

19. 144
12 * 12 = 144.

"be" is the closest identifier to that statement. The earlier stuff is part of a secondary clause and irrelevant because it's not clearly defined what "be" would mean in that context. If it was "cost", then it would be a different answer.

25. Bo and Bubba have adjoining hoglots
Each of them had a runt that could fit through a hole they wallered under the fence. When Bo's runt goes under the fence Bubba has twice as many hogs as Bo. When Bubba's runt goes under into Bo's lot Bubba has just as many hogs as Bo.

How many hogs do they each have in their lots?

G'mornin :)

30. Wow! I really had to flex some old muscles to get that one!
Let Bo's hogs = x and Bubba's hogs = y.

When Bo's runt goes under the fence Bubba has twice as many hogs as Bo, so 2(x-1)=y+1.

When Bubba's runt goes under into Bo's lot Bubba has just as many hogs as Bo, so y-1=x+1. Solving for y, y=x+2.

Plugging the y value (x+2) into the first equation, we get everything in terms of x, 2(x-1)=(x+2)+1, which expands and simplifies to 2x-2=x+3. Solve for x, and x=5.

Plugging the x value into the second equation, we get y-1=5+1, or y=7.

So, Bo has 5 hogs and Bubba has 7. When Bo's runt goes into Bubba's lot, Bo has 4 and Bubba has 8. When Bubba's runt goes into Bo's lot, Bo has 6 and Bubba has 6.
