Edited on Wed Nov-21-07 05:55 PM by Ekirh
My family always does the traditional turkey and ham.. but I know for a fact some of you out there just ain't down with that for whatever reason. So vegetarians, non turkey enthusiasts, or just people who flat out want to do something different... if it's not going to be Turkey or Ham.. what is it going to be :).

6. Artichoke appetizer
Stuffed delicata squash
New potatoes w/ rosemary
Green beans w/ almonds
Maybe a little salad

For dessert, either tofu-pumpkin pie (it's way better than it sounds) or poached pear tarts.

We're doing a family gathering on Sunday, and we're making Indian food. Should be fun!

7. Not turkey
Not sure what we're having, but I just picked up some salami, gouda and crackers, some fresh parmesan and basil tortellonis, gallons and gallons of booze, and some dark chocolate.

It's my birthday, so I can do whatever I want. :P

10. everything else :D
Thanksgiving is THE holiday to my husband's parents, for the eating, and that's where we're going tomorrow. They cook two turkeys each year and it's always such a big deal so last year I felt weird not eating them and mm-mm-mming. I'll enjoy the spinach though :9 And I made two sweet potato pies to take.

14. Canned ham
a whole turkey for myself? You've got to be kidding! One year I did a frozen turkey breast, but it fared particularly poorly as leftovers (spongy :puke: ).

Oddly enough, I am aware of only one place on the island that has one-pound Dak canned Danish hams: a little convenience store in the crummy neighborhood near my office! The big stores only have huge five-pound ones, which is almost as bad as the turkey.

So, along with the ham, I've acquired a sweet potato, a can of peas, and a box of Stove Top, which should render a reasonable facsimile of a holiday meal (or two or three).

15. Enchiladas.
We decided we just didn't want to cook a turkey for the two of us this year. So we are having homemade cheese & onion enchiladas instead.

For breakfast, we are getting up and cooking a German puff pancake with pear-ginger compote, sausage links, and fresh brewed coffee with cream.

17. Whatever they're serving in the cafeteria at work.
I have to work tomorrow, and after that I might get to go to a family member's house for leftovers; since most of them want to go to a movie they didn't want to hold dinner for a whole freakin' hour for me to get there. So I guess I'll have some leftovers with whoever decides not to go to the movie. Or else maybe I'll just go home and have a peanut butter sandwich and hang out with the cats.

my husband screwed up and forgot to buy it. So I'm stuck with tempeh. Not amused. I love seitan and haven't had any in awhile.

28. Proof that veg*ns are evil.
Nah.

It's a meat substitute made of wheat protein. It's the gluten, the stuff that makes bread dough elastic. The gluten is cooked with ginger, shoyu, and kombu, and ta-da! It's seitan. It's pretty high in protein but has no saturated fat or cholesterol. It's got a totally different mouthfeel than tofu--way more variety of texture and more toothiness.

If you've had mock chicken or mock duck (or 'Buddha Food' or kofu or 'wheat meat'), you've probably had seitan.

37. There's nothing wrong with seitan itself.
One manufacturer or distributor from that region may have created a problem. It's sort of asking if any bread is safe after a rash of bad bread in China.

There are many (dozens? hundreds? I don't know!) manufacturers of seitan in the US. I tend to buy local seitan and tofu, but not everyone can do that. It's good to pay attention to where your food is coming from, though.

34. I SOOO love seitan.
But honestly, when I've made Thanksgiving dinner, I didn't use any meat substitutes. There's so much without it, that I just served a traditional meal sans turkey. Complaining was minimal.
