My artwork and writing must really REALLY SUCK!
I've been an artist for 30 years, a writer and humorist for 25; in all that time I've made about $1.75 clear profit.

My cafepress site is totally dead; I haven't sold ANYTHING there in quite awhile, though I added several new designs over two months ago.

It seems to me my political work shows a rare degree of commitment in these dangerous times we live in, especially when one is working without any recompense at all... when Bushco can effectively silence and control even their wealthiest critics and opponents, what chance does a lil' monkey like me have?...

Methinks my work must just suck dead-donkey-thingamabob, all day long, come what may...

What say ye, noble citizens? Shall I keep on keepin' on, or just pack it in and go into aluminum siding refinishing?

YOU make the call.

I don't think anyone has ever sold an animated gif, except for Mark Fiore but he does Flash anyway (and they're usually crap)

Your cafe press site gives visitors web-sized views of web-sized graphics, I can't see a point in purchasing bigger prints of them, unless there's more details you can't see unless you do have a bigger version. If that's the case, magnify a small portion of the image and offer that as a second view, but I kind doubt that's the case.

I like the G-Dubs Big Adventure, you might be able to market that to the college crowd, as a door poster, but I'm not sure how well it would handle being blown-up to that size.

Perhaps if you separated the animated gifs from what you intend to sell as mouse-pads, cups, etc., then the site might make a bit more sense.

edit: a rare degree of commitment? My photobucket account has dozens more anti-bush pictures, and I'd hardly even consider calling it a level of commitment, let alone a rare one

2. Ummm... did you give it more than a cursory glance?
"Perhaps if you separated the animated gifs from what you intend to sell as mouse-pads, cups, etc., then the site might make a bit more sense."

Yeah, well... the cafepress site features ONLY designs that are actually applicable--no animated gifs there, I just put up a few on this posting as an example of the sort of work I do across the board... you couldn't produce a shirt or cup with an animated gif on it, I would've thought that obvious...

Look, there are only 9 designs up there, and none of them is an animated gif.

There!--perhaps the site makes a bit more sense to you now?

As to your last paragraph, I guess I'd refer you to my presidentevilonline site and ask you if you honestly know of another site where you can go to see lil films of Dick Cheney's head exploding, or Bush fellating someone's finger... what I'm saying here is, I'm more extreme than average, have been since the very beginning--I started a weekly column for an alternative paper in Duluth, MN in late '99, when Bush first started running; I titled it Millions Are Horrified, prophetically enough, and warned people in the most strident terms possible that the Bushes are a 400-year-old political dynasty with grim designs on our future as a free republic--oh shit, you can find examples aplenty on my main site--my point is, I went after 'em with everything I had, for almost 4 years, before serious fatigue set in, mostly cuz I'm piss-poor all the time...

My point, my dear DS1, is this: You may collect 'em, but I make 'em, and I SIGN my work with my actual name (a rarity, I'd say), and I'm not that hard to find...

These ARE insane nazi assholes we're dealing with here, y'know... and if and when martial law is declared and the backlash comes, I will be one of the first ones up against the wall, I have no doubt of that... I mean, at that point, I'll be LUCKY to come out dead and all in one piece...

But I don't really care; I have very little to lose, and I never could keep my trap shut when it comes to stuff like this; I've always had a hard time putting up with ridiculous shit coming from mindless zombies bent on taking over and destroying my world...

Not all that rare? Y'know, the citizens of this country LET this happen; they sat idly by or went shopping while the neocons told 'em the most outrageous lies, stuff they KNEW couldn't even REMOTELY be true:

In summary, all I'm saying is:
I may be unknown to you, but I put myself out there, and I carried a helluva lotta water for the cause of freedom, and I wish I could say that all I got for it was one of my own dumb t-shirts...

But I can't... cuz I can't afford one.

T-shirts, mugs, buttons n' cards at Laugh City

President Evil Online has risen from the grave!

ps: ALL images are web-sized when viewed on the web... do you really think I know nothing about resolution or prepping images for print? And you can't really offer second views as you suggest in cafepress; it's a closed system with its own limits built-in (there may be a way of doing it, but I haven't discovered it yet)... at any rate, ANYONE buying anything from them takes it on faith that the end product will be of proper resolution for its size.
And if one designs properly, there's nothing to worry about...

Anyway, thank you for your kind words of support... I feel much much better.

3. I don't collect them
and once Photobucket is subpoenaed, along with my paid and personal hosting site, we'll be in the same boat.

And to me, it looked like you were mixing the two as the same, and that didn't lead me to think you were aware of print/web resolution. There's thousands of people out there who don't, maybe a disclaimer of "all prints available at 300dpi" would help.

5. No site link?
If you don't collect them, I take it you're saying you make them...

Do you sign them, or are they done pseudonymously or anonymously?

Is anyone else allowed to see them?

Finally, I don't see anyone else in cafepress using such a disclaimer as you suggest...

Again, thanx for your input, and have a lovely day.

Knowing that even an artist of your skill and commitment to your craft has had to--oh, wait, I don't really know a thing about you, and you've provided no samples of your own work... you could be an artist of real merit, one who has sunk endless effort into your work and taken real risks similar to the ones I've embraced... or you COULD just be some idiot shining me on, come to think of it...

Hmmm... I'm sorry, but I must tell you that I wasn't even speaking to you, actually; I meant everyone else.
Have a nice day.

I wasn't "shining you on". Damn, who pissed in your Cheerios?

I'll make sure the people I sent your page to know what an uptight dick you can be and tell them to give their money to someone who actually has a clue and isn't a stuck up twit.

I've been doing pen and ink, charcoals, watercolors, etc. for over thirty years and have hundreds of works, and not the simplistic Photoshop simpleton stuff that I see on that page.I don't post them because I have no way to do so, no desire to do so, and I do them FOR ME, not for money, something that means more to you than your passion for the craft, apparently.I said if you wanted to make money become an accountant as a joke (you know the old "starving artist" bit exists for a reason, don't you?).Maybe the reason you're not selling anything is because any moron with Photoshop and an hour to spare can do it?

7. It's hard to get anywhere as an independent. I sold practically nothing at my CafeShop.
Hey, whaddayaknow? It's still there: http://www.cafepress.com/impracticaljoke
A buddy of mine bought a couple of Just A Fish stickers, and someone I don't know bought a coffee mug, but CafePress would only give me the (admittedly tiny) royalties in store credit and I never even bothered with it.

I'd recommend submitting ideas to Northern Sun for t-shirts and bumper stickers. I sent them some 250 and they bought two. However, one became popular enough as a bumper sticker that they put it on a t-shirt as well and paid me for that, too. http://www.northernsun.com/n/s/8030.html
Mind you, I didn't exactly buy a yacht with the money; I cleared maybe $100 all told. But it's a nice start, a pleasant affirmation, and could lead to more sales to them or other bumper sticker companies. (Whenever you see a clever bumper sticker (I mean on a parked car) I recommend getting close to find the name of the company that made it. That's how I found Northern Sun.)

Moreover, back when I sold stuff to Northern Sun, they were much more informal. I just emailed my one-liners to the boss. Now they're a little more sophisticated: http://www.northernsun.com/n/s/ideas.html and indicate that professional artwork (which you unquestionably do) gives you an advantage over those of us who can't draw a straight line.

Don't give up, at least as long as it gives you joy, or at least some level of satisfaction.

What would be wrong with giving it to a fellow DUer? Or just saying nothing if you can't be nice? You're just jumping on the chance to criticize someone. No one asks for negative criticism, especially when it is put in an unkind way. "Your work needs work" is just dismissive and is not at all helpful.

29. Not as jumpy as you, apparently...
Actually, I feel pretty good this early evening...

:toast:

I'm sorry! I've been away all afternoon, and it appears I missed my own mauling, darn it!

Okay, terrible confession time: I posted this to get some attention. There. I said it.

I know I'll probably never get rich with my work; if it was gonna happen, it woulda happened long ago... but I AM a professional writer and artist who USED to make a decent chunk of my living off these endeavors--yes, I was being facetious saying I hadn't made ANY money; I just haven't made any in awhile, things have been pretty spare of late... I'm doing some freelance proofreading right now, and a bit of web design, but as I know many out there can understand, it's not enough, and I'm looking at a serious, quite possibly fatal crimp in my coming holiday season this year...

So please forgive me if I'm a bit touchy, but I'm in a real bind right now. I'm trying to throw some attention toward my work overall, and the store, hoping some interested fellow DUers out there will actually go, check it out, maybe buy something or pass the site on to a friend or two, y'know?

treestar was pretty close to the mark; I'm looking for support and FRIENDLY conversation and exchange of ideas, not wildy-off-the-mark "advice" about art or the basic workings of life blurted into my face by any completely non-credentialed and totally anonymous cretin who feels like weighing in with an opinion.

F'rinstances:
Someone helpfully informed me that I shouldn't attempt to put animated gifs on shirts.
Another suggested I become an accountant.
A third opined that I should not be encouraged in pursuing an artistic career.

Funny, dude... reeeeal funny (actually, that one WAS kinda funny!...)

You take me to task because I had the temerity to tell your nasty misbegotten little friend of very few words to piss off.

Yes yes, my dears, everyone's entitled to their opinion--but in MY opinion, the motivation behind such terse, pointed and dismissive responses as "and your work needs work" is questionable at best.

And what do ya know?... at this point, 30 hours into the experiment and with almost 700 views, with a few notable exceptions, that seems to be all I'm getting here at DU... kinda sad, seems to me...

This place used to be cool; I used to meet such interesting types here...

32. Actually, I used to post here for a coupla years back a coupla years ago...
I moved and kinda lost all my info and changed ISPs, and I was busy with a lot of stuff... when I finally returned, I just thought I'd start again under a new moniker... ironically, those who don't remember me are actually the new kids in town to my view...

I'm always up for constructive criticism; problem is, I just don't think much of what I've gotten here has been that at all... and in the past, the ratio of positive to negative response has been much more balanced, which makes it easier to shrug off some stuff...

Anyway, thanks for the positive sentiment; my best to you as well.

It all sort of dwells on the same tired and superficial theme. I don't find it particularly clever, nor does it make any sort of profound statement. It's clear you have the technical abilities to create good work, perhaps you should broaden your work and search for new sources of inspiration, otherwise I don't imagine your luck will turn around.

Just my two cents, take it or leave it I guess.

Okay, fine. Your work is shit. It's neither good art, nor is it funny. AND you're trying to hock it on a private website, which either is or should be against the rules.

I wouldn't say anything, except for the completely assholish way you've responded to everyone in this thread who hasn't kissed you so far up the colon you can smell their breath. Fuck that. It's one thing if a genuinely nice person seeks criticism on art which is somehow lacking, that demands a kind touch. You, on the other hand, ASKED for criticism -- and when you got it, no matter how well-intended, you responded like a petulant little 3-year-old who didn't get to play with the toy you wanted in pre-school.

Grow the fuck up.

And don't quit your day job.
