Future Oscar picks. Who will get one down the road?
I say Adam Sandler, I don't think he's funny and I don't particularly like him, but I'll bet you anything he wins an Oscar in five years or so. I think he's being "groomed" for it. It's one of those clown actor/comedian goes to serious drama fame stories.

1. Sandler, I know Bill Murray.
I've watched Bill Murray. Bill Murray is a favorite of mine.

Sandler, you're no Bill Murray.

6. It didn't seem to work for Jim Carrey...
He got rave reviews and several end-of-year acting awards for "serious" roles in The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, but failed to get even an Oscar nomination.

I think the AMPAS voters tend to resent it when someone pegged as a comic actor tries to do a dramatic part -- it's like they're horning in on the domain of another group of actors.

7. Actually, despite the reviews...
...I've never known him to be a great actor.

"Eternal Sunshine" is the first movie I've seen him in where he wasn't playing Jim Carrey, not a role.

2. Not a bad choice...
he can do drama pretty well.

I would guess Tom Cruise. Hollywood owes him, and he can turn in a good performance when required.

3. I wanted to really not like him in 'Reign O'er Me'
But I ended up liking him and the movie.

4. Johnny Depp
Won't get one for any particular role. Will eventually get a lifetime achievement award of some sort.

5. Ryan Gosling, Javier Bardem, Jude Law, Naomi Watts, Kate Winslet, Julianne Moore
are all possible targets. I think the Oscars often go to the best role, actually, and whoever is lucky to have gotten that role then gets the Oscar as a fringe benefit.

10. Paul Giamatti
Sooner or later, he'll get an Oscar. Probably Best Supporting Actor. But he's a damn fine actor.

13. James McAvoy
I've had my eye on this one since he appeared in Children of Dune. Now he's kicking ass in Atonement.

15. One would have said the same thing about Tom Hanks in his early
years.

Now he's like the next James Stewart/Gary Cooper
