West coast people--what is your opinion of In and Out Burger?
I ask because I've never been there, but I've had a couple of people who've just raved and raved about the burgers there. Myself being a huge fan of good burgers, I wanted to try it when I was in Las Vegas, but my in-laws never felt like leaving the #%#$@ Strip when we were there and stupid In and Out Burger didn't put any of its restaraunts on the Strip.

And if In and Out Burgers really are that good, who the hell do they think they are not expanding to other parts of the country?

Of course if they are vastly overrated, then I'm in the clear.

I really wish some franchises would expand. I'm too old to keep eating like I want, but it'd be nice to have some more options. Out here in Ioway, you get Burger King, Mickey D's, Culver's, Sonic, and Hardee's. Zzzzzz.

Nuttin' like a good burger.

How'd Iowa end up with Sonic, but not Milwaukee? That'd be a slam-dunk, I'd think.

...In'n'Out!
It's what a haaaaaamburger's
Aaaaall about!!!

Actually, I never ate there...just heard their ads played over and over (and over and over and over...) on the radio. (Needless to say, with a name like that, lots of teen guys "modified" their bumper stickers for greater effect.) When it came to fast-food burgers from SoCal, I prefered Tommie's and Fatburger, and never paid much attention to In'n'Out.

There's a small local chain called Lindburgers. They've got about 50 different styles of burgers on the menu. The patties are nice and thick and cooked the way you like them.

26. Yeah, that place is great!
In-and-Out's a fast food place, though, so the proper comparison would be to McDonald's, Wendy's or Burger King. And in that lineup, no one comes close. In-and-Out is phenomenal. Gawd, I miss that place!

8. I think it's gross, personally
From my own personal In-N-Out polls, it seems like people who are from the West Coast, either originally or for a very long time, love it. Those of us who are transplants, not so much.

My own personal take: the burger patty is so freakin' thin that you barely taste the burger through all the other shit they put on it. Speaking of shit they put on it, I don't know what it is with the west coast and putting thousand island dressing on their burgers, but that's disgusting. Period.

The fries, though fresh, are not completely cooked. They would be quite good if they spent a bit more time in the fryer. I think. As is, they're cold almost immediately and taste like slightly mushy raw potato with a thin fried covering.

And don't even get me started on the "animal style" crap and the rest of the hidden menu. :puke:

A la the Big Mac. Which you can beat me up all you want, but I like Big Macs. It's a weakness, I know.

But if you're saying the In and Out Burgers are no different than a Big Mac, which I can get down the street, then I guess I'm not missing too much.

but if we're talking about a McD's hamburger with dressing on it...In'N'Out's not QUITE that bad...I think the hamburgers at In'N'Out are actually made with beef. ;)

I'm not going to beat you up for going to McD's. I go there too. I think those bastards put an addictive substance in their fries. :D

Their burgers are pretty good, the best for fast food. The big slice of onion, fresh lettuce (a piece not some shredded bullshit) and a slice of tomato. Kind of like you make them at home.....

Their fries are really good (need to be a little crispier however). And their shakes are killer too.

10. My S.O. tried them, thinking I had over-rated them
and he fell in LOVE. Amazing amazing amazing burgers. The fries are just okay -- very fresh, but I think I've been ruined by the crispy-coated ones that everyone else sells.

There's one right near LAX, and it's often a first stop --- I'll avoid the bad food on USAir knowing that an In-and-Out awaits. We're going to AZ in 2 weeks, and there's an In-and-Out on the way out to Goodyear, and it's on the itinerary!

How sad is it that I can unerringly find burger joints (and good restaurants) are in the cities I visit, but often get lost trying to find the rental car return?

16. Greatness
I recently moved to SoCal and seriously one of the things I love about this place is In N Out Burger.

The reason why they're only in SoCal and Vegas is that they are obsessive about using only fresh ingredients and only ship within a limited radius to adhere to this standard.

But they are delicious, and so are their shakes and fries. Definitely check it out if you get a chance.

18. There have been a couple of local chains from other areas open up in South Florida
Primanti Brothers (from Pittsburgh) and Five Guys (from Washington DC) have both opened up satallite shops in South Florida. I've tried both--both were okay, but not what I had been expecting after hearing all the hype. So I'm left wondering if In and Out Burger too would live up to the high expectations which have been put upon it.

Basic stuff they offer, but the formula is clearly working for them.

31. They have an outlet in Marin County
It's one of the few "normal" places in Marin - crowds of happy families and seniors and
newly arrived immigrants and blue collar workers and business executives. A veritable melting pot.

Great food. And they pay their workers well - it was $ 9 or $ 10 bucks a few years ago - compared to McDonalds and Burger King where the worker's get $ 5.50 or something (Restaurant work is outside the purview of the normal minimum wage.)

40. It's ok, but could be better
I'm a West coaster and have grown up with In N Out. My opinion is that the burgers could be AMAZING if they used better burger, ironically. Meaning, all of the other ingredients in the sandwich are outstanding, but the beef is simply OK, and sometimes not even that.

I always get extra pickle on mine, btw -- not even sure if they normally put pickle, but imho it's essential.

The fries, now, they are another story -- they are the only fast food fry that you could actually eat cold -- not that they are good cold, but they are edible cold -- unlike McD's fries and most others.

Plus, as has been pointed out, they are a decent employer. I go to mine on the way to Costco :D (I call it my blue run)

Maybe it's so good because the beef isn't frozen and the french fries come from potatoes cut there.

44. Honestly? I think they're overrated
I love In-N-Out for its simplicity. I grew quite weary many years ago of trying to decipher the ever-expanding-with-cutesy-names menus at most fast-food places.

But In-N-Out burgers are tasty because they're loaded with salt — or, at least, they taste like it. Aesthetically, they're rather disgusting, often with more cheese on the wrapper than on the burger itself, which looks like something rather large sat on it. I also don't like large lettuce leaves on a burger, particularly if they're warm and soggy. And the fries are awful. (Hint to management: Don't just wave them under the sun for a few seconds. Cook them.)

I'll eat there. In fact, I and a group of friends (one of whom ate four Double Doubles) once went 10 miles out of our way to go to one. But, really, I think it's sort of a Kollyforniya Cool thing.

Now, if you want a really good fast-food burger, it's A&W. :9
