Now THIS is musical longevity.

Petula Clark, CBE (born 15 November 1932), is an English singer, actress and composer best known for her upbeat popular international hits of the 1960s. With more than 70 million records sold worldwide, she is the most successful British female solo recording artist and is cited as such in the Guinness Book of World Records. She also holds the distinction of having the longest span on the international pop charts of any artist — 51 years — from 1954, when "The Little Shoemaker" made the UK Top Twenty, to 2005, when her CD L'essentiel - 20 Succès Inoubliables charted in Belgium.

1. Awesome; I love Petula
I had NO idea she recorded "The Little Shoemaker" in 1954, though. I remember the Gaylord's version well; I was 9 at the time and very "into" pop music. I remember Ms Clark best, of course, for "Downtown," "I Know a Place," and "Don't Sleep in the Subway. Honestly, if someone had asked me who was the most successful British female solo recording artist, I'd have said Dusty Springfield, another big favorite of mine. Thank you for this info. :toast:

3. I hear snatches of what passes for pop music today and shudder
boys trying to sound like Britney Spears, who sounds like a cartoon character herself, or rappers shrieking threats and obscenities. Thank goodness for oldies stations!

5. She's a fierce performer.
I got to back her up in the broadway show "Blood Brothers".

Every night she transported me back to Memphis Tennessee circa 1964, and I was hearing "Downtown" on the radio for the first time.
