1. You really want to do this? Really?
Well, I usually don't get too into the anti-veg posts on DU, but this one was just too cutesy.

GRAPHIC, please don't scroll down if you're uncomfortable with mild images of animal mistreatment. No truly graphic images follow.

You are what you eat:

Live, suffering disemboweled calf. "Mmmm, veal."

Live male chicks (of no value) dying in a dumpster. That's the byproduct of egg production. Yum.

Pork. Mmmm.

Foie gras! Delicious!

BTW, it's spelled vegetarians.

14. Okay, I know a lot of vegetarians and vegans, so I know...
That not eating meat doesn't affect the sense of humour, so I really don't get why you're so up in arms about a silly joke.

16. Meh, not so up in arms.
I just don't like to have the issue made a joke of.

I'm a little tired of people here thinking it's "cute" to make light of veg*nism. It gets damned old, and DU has driven off an awful lot of us.

23. The "little painting"
portrays an apparently bloodthirsty being drooling over a piece of bloody flesh.

The OP must have a pretty negative impression of veg*nism if s/he thinks that's funny.

11. There was nothing anti in this post
it was just a funny picture I found on the web. I obviously underestimated your sense of humor. It is actually a clever piece of art. And you have no idea what my position is on the subject you espouse.

It was a joke .. get over yourself

I'm sorry that you are so wrapped up in your sense of self-righteousness to appreciate it. I pity you as much as those innocent animals ... at least they are dead, you have to live with a sense of hubris and superiority which, if we are to believe the Greeks willlead to your own destruction.

Ha, ha, vegetarians and their beliefs are so funny! Let's post cartoons about them! Let's ignore the fact that DU has driven off many veg posters over dumb interpretations of their beliefs!

Goodbye friesianrider! Goodbye shockra! Aloha, 4_legs_good! So long, GothicSponge! See you later, smbolinsch! Adios, curse10! Eat shit, livinginphotographs! Bye-bye, folks, we didn't want you here in the first place!

Put yourself in our place for one second...just one second. You thought it was funny. Why would we think it was funny?

And really, please go ahead and pretend that you know me and what I think. My "self-righteousness?" Hubris or superiority? What do you know about me?

Let's review.
1. You make a "funny" post about veg*ns.
2. I respond with with mild photos about your "funny" post.
3. You accuse me of self-righteousness, hubris, and superiority which "will lead to {my} own destruction."

Get over *yourself* ashling.

18. You have got to be kidding.
It was a harmless joke accompanying a clever pop-culture reference. If THAT drives anyone away, they probably need to take a long hard look in the mirror and figure out how to geth the stick out of their ass.

And go ahead, crack jokes about any aspect of my belief system you want, I will probably laugh.

19. That harmless joke didn't drive off DUers.
The rampant anti-veg culture here did.

I think it's better than it has been in the past, frankly, but it's still here. I don't think it's unreasonable to respond to jokes about my belief system, though. Are you suggesting I should just shut up?

24. So was your sense of humour brutally beaten to death as a child or something?
Since you decided to mention me being a Newfie, I love a good Newfie joke.

I also enjoy a good straight edge joke. (Straight edge is part of my peronal belief system.)

That's one of my favourite comic strips, probably because I have a what'd'ya'call...sense of humour.

25. Of course. I'm from New England.

Seriously, though, Newfies and StraightEdgers aren't a big target. It's one thing to appreciate a joke and another to find a stranger posting a graphic of you as a monster doing the thing that is most abhorrent to you.

I've had people spike my drinks when I wasn't looking in attempts to get me to drink. I know what it's like to be constantly given shit about something like that.

And there are ENDLESS amounts of Newfie jokes.

27. No, not here.
I can understand having people spike drinks, because I've been lied to countless times about what is in food. I expect you do know what it is like to get endless shit about your choices.

So, do you come here and find cartoons about you? Do you think that you are a joke here? Are you portrayed as wanting to do or actually doing the things that are anathema, and then accused of hubris for arguing?

I'll tell the dickheads they're being dickheads and I'll laugh at something that's clever or funny, even if it's at my expense. In this instance, ashling was not being a dickhead by posting the picture and making a joke.

29. It's not that easy.
I didn't (and I don't) think that ashling was being a dickhead, and I certainly didn't say that s/he was. I responded (and responded mildly) because accusations of hypocrisy (even as a joke) are not okay. I just don't think it's funny--it isn't the cartoon monster bit, it's the dripping flesh in the "vegetarian's" claw that is shitty to me.

39. the difference is, that joke is funny
I like the art of the OP - I'm a big fan of that style. I am not offended, but I also don't see it as "funny" and I love to laugh at just about everything, including my own beliefs. Clever picture? Sure. Funny joke? Not really, and mostly because jokes generally have something humorous in them. meh.

32. I admit my response may have been over the top
(my response would have been better if I had not used the "hubris," "superiority" thing. "Self righteous" I'll stand by. for now. Generally calledfor when someone jumps to using pictures of abused and slaughtered animals, fetal tissue, etc. You said "you don't know me" and you are right. Well, you don't know me either, but you immediately jumped to the conclusion that I was making fun of you and immediately trotted out pictures which you , dare I say "hoped", I would find offensive.

I thought it was a clever use of a medium (food) anthropomorphized. Call me a little slow or niave, but I never made the connection with a monster and I'm not sure I do now, except for the fact that you are apparently pretty put off by it.

When I pass the automotive place down the street I smile at the figure of a guy waving made out of disc brakes, transmissions, and muffler parts. When I pass the feed store I take pleasure in the people and animals made out of old tractor parts. I think it is a clever use of a material that is used in their business.

But, heck, I get perplexed with the stuff they put in the movies and on tv, and in kids' cartoons these days. Transformers, mega whatevers, and spongebob square pants (who I wouldn't even know except that he was used as one of the choices in a voting machine demonstration) I find the Simpsons a little creepy. You may think I am a little old, but I think most pop culture went terribly wrong around the same time as disco music came on the scene (it was pretty much downhill after the Beatles broke up, anyway)

And, yess, I do eat meat ... and a lot of fresh vegetables that I grow myself. However, I have raised two daughters who both went through periods of vegetarianism. My wife and I went way out of our way to make sure that there eating choices were accepted and their needs met - (that is very important to me having been constantly chided as a kid for not eating some things and having a dad who on at least two ocassions came around the table to cram stuff in my mouth.) I can't tell you how many tofurkeys we threw out after they changed their minds.

I am sorry you were offended by the picture. People have left DU from time to time for lots of reasons. I have almost left myself on occassion. That would not be good ... for you or me. Go ahead and put me on ignore ... heck, I probably deserve it, but don't leave.

To the extent that it was insensetive, I apologize.

Now you two go back to arguing about "Newfies", "straight edgers" and whatever, because I have no idea what you are talking about.

13. Unfortunately, I was raised on meat & potatoes...
When I was younger, I went strictly vegan for a couple years; but wasn't disciplined enough to balance my proteins. The lack of protein, made me brain-numb.

Now that I eat meat again (mostly fish & foul {as little as possible}), I privately give thanks to the creatures who allow me to live. In my heart of hearts, I'd still be a vegan -- but with ADD, I can't maintain a vegan discipline over the long haul. :(

Artistically creative. As a vegetarian, I'm not offended in the slightest. I don't think I would have given it a second thought beyond "Wow, cool graphics" if not for the above controversy. I guess I can see the point. But I'm not sure what the artist's meaning is behind the picture.
