The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poem Thread, 10/4/07

"Welcome, Family"

I've lived far enough away for long enough now
To buy shoes shaped like my feet.
Some mornings, there is no reason to strap
On a bra, and last week I took the kids
To the drugstore in my slippers.

Nights like tonight, that saucer moon rolls and rolls
On its edge over the mountain, all the way home
And three nights a week we eat beans and cheese.

My neighbor said I dress the way
I used to ridicule local teenagers for dressing—
Coats are such a bother. In Portland, we know
Thirty-four ways to say partly cloudy, chance of rain.

Last May I flew to San Francisco and rediscovered
The world of fashion, hunger and heat.
Here, the air is starting to smell of pumpkins;
I've pulled out the wool quilt.

The corners may never come clean.
Eighty three years will do that to a house, so
I put stuff in front of them.

I hope they like it here. I’ll remodel the kitchen,
turn up the heat, stock the fridge
And wash all the windows; then
Greet them with a smile and my hair neatly combed.
