Hi,

It has become apparent to me that I am having a hard enough time just breathing these days. I am staring hard, every morning, at my children to gather the courage to get up and keep living. In a nutshell, it is being a walking dead woman. I have, so very much, appreciated the many kindnesses shown to me/us over the last month. I said it before but Leonard's family was stunned by the outpouring of messages here. The truly unfortunate thing is that my husband never realized how well and truly loved he was. He was a playful boy and a loving man all wrapped up in an incredibly handsome package. And I still can't make myself believe he's gone. My heart and my head are stuck back at 12:32, Sunday August 26. The crushing crowds at the funeral home nor the many visitors over the next few days didn't do anything to make it any more real for me. My life, my love, my soul is gone. When I see the pain reflected in the faces of his coworkers, our friends, my family...it intensifies the fact.

His funeral was a tribute to who he was. A man. 32 of his friends, neighbors, coworkers and family got up to speak. I could have listened all day. My mother in law read the letter that I had put in his anniversary card to begin the service (you can read it on my blog posted 7/19-my blog is in my profile-if you wish). Over 500 people signed the book.

And still, I want to see his truck pull in the drive. I ache for him.

You have all been dear and wonderful friends to me. Whether it was arguing in GD...or goofing off in the lounge, or telling me (via PM) what a shitty mod I was. If you want to keep up with us, I post a lot on my blog. I'll leave my PM box open, but it may take awhile to get a reply. But I have to be done posting because I'm not me anymore. You are all sweet people. You really are.

I just can't do this anymore. Because I'm not me anymore.

I can't quite identify, but sorta.
My fiance of 8 years passed away suddenly in a motorcyle wreck May 20th, 2001.
I was stuck for quite awhile.
Fortunately, I have to say, we had no children...
You will become unstuck. You will make it, I promise. I know that is hard to see right now, and I know that people have told you this 'till you are tired of hearing it. Take it from one who has (sorta) been there. I'm looking back at it from the other side of six years now. My life has unfolded in quite a way, but I still have to drive down the same roads; live in the same town as we (Ken and I) used to. In a _____ irony, I am now living almost around the corner from his parents.
Some days it is still fresh...but less days than it used to be.
I kept repeating to myself that someday it would be better; I would be in my life again.
It will feel like you are in a different universe; a parallell one.
I am able now to see how even in death he gave me a wonderful gift, and to love him all the more for it.
I will be thinking of you and your beautiful children always. I don't forget these things.

Take all the time you need. You may not be able to come back here, and we certainly understand that. I was an active member of the VHML until after Ken died..now, I post once every six months.

Please let us know how you are doing, however.

8. A friend of mine...

years ago was talking about the loss of his father. This was before my own father had passed, and so I really had no frame of reference as to how that felt. He said people that say time will heal all wounds, but that's not true at all. It's like losing your arm or your leg, he said. It's never going to grow back and you're never going to be the same person you were before. Nothing will ever be right again. But just as with losing one of your limbs, you eventually figure out how to live your life in a way that makes sense to you. Life will never be what it was, but it will be what it is. And that's just about all any of us has a right to expect out of this world.

You're at the beginning of a long and painful journey that nobody should ever have to make alone. There will be times when you won't want a new life, and this journey that you're on will not seem worth the effort, especially when the destination is so uncertain. But you need to know, as I'm sure you do know, that you have the support of a large and loving family and a vast circle of friends. And you have love and memories of love, and those never really leave us.

You will always be you. I know a very large piece is missing inside you... and time never completely heals all wounds (sometimes it just doesn't). It is natural to become numb in grief... to just shut down. When I went to grief counseling after my mother's death, my counselor invited me to her home. We'd talked for about 6 months by that time. When she invited me to take a look at her backyard I was astounded. There were layers upon layers of flowers... it was one of the most beautiful yards I'd ever seen in Southern California. I remember my expression... "Wow!" Then, I remember what she said in response to it. She said, something like, "It's nice that you had a reaction because a lot of my patients don't." And, that is the moment I knew I was beginning to come out of the fog.

Though this "fog" you are in at this time feels safe, it is not life... and you know (I'm sure) it isn't how your husband would want you to live out the rest of your life. Please forgive me if I'm over stepping here.

Please do what works for you. For me, it was long walks on the beach, music, and talking with a counselor (until one day she had to tell me I didn't need to go to her to "just talk girl talk"! lol). Even though the experts tell you not to make drastic changes after the death of a loved-one, after my mother died I moved, sold my car, and changed jobs. It helped me. I think every person is unique... and not everybody knows what will work for every individual.

Okay, I'm rambling now.

Please take care of yourself. You always talk about your children, and I know they are first and foremost on your mind, but please take care of YOU too... alright?!

The memories of the good and the bad times will always be there. And those are the best, even the bad ones. I lost a friend and classmate, a few years back, and it was hard. It was not as hard as losing a spouse but it still was so shocking to get that call. A song that helped me so many times in my life as I have gone through, dealing with being paralyzed, and some of the trying times that have come my way has been "The Dance" by Garth Brooks. I know he is a country singer and you may not like country, but listen to the lyrics of this song.

You may have lost him, but you did not miss the dance with him and that is what counts.

I've been away from DU for quite a while now, and am just reading of your husband's passing. I am very sorry for your loss. Your husband was just a few years older than mine, and I honestly don't know what I would do were I in your shoes. Crumple into a little ball and not move for a million years, most likely.
