The sixties.....British music; peace and harmony; recreational drugs; if not free sex, at least less of an aversion to it; anti-war; anti-corporations.....
The seventies......more rock and roll, perhaps a little louder and more insistent; discos!; folk music seeing a return; less peaceful, less harmonius......
The eighties......more rhyme, more reason; solo singers seeing a resurgence; love music again; more themed music; more meaning searched for.....
The nineties.......everything melding into one; raves; rap music becoming more popular; you like it, you can find it somewhere; show music; boy bands.......
But where is the meaning? Where are the anti-war songs? Where are the anti-corporation songs? Where is the boldness of songwriters and singers looking for the next indication of peace? Where is the concern? Where is the new folk music? Where are the John Denvers, Pete Seegers, Arlo Guthries?
There are so few around now; instead music is more a money-maker than it ever was--or should have been. There are a few brave souls out there protesting--there are a few who haven't given in to the "establishment," but the surge of the sixties and early seventies isn't there. I think that's sad--we need to see more singers like Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez again, and less like Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson and other such disasters on two legs.
on edit: if I'm particularly out of touch with music in general, forgive me--I've been playing oldies all night, and rarely listen to the radio anymore. ;)
