If "objects in mirror are closer than they appear"
Edited on Sun Aug-26-07 07:11 AM by Southpawkicker
then how come if I turn to look at them (cars, trucks usually) they always look normal to me... and in the mirror they are smaller.

One would think that the disparity would confuse the mind for a minute... but it doesn't me that I'm aware of.

1. "closer than they appear" is the technically correct phrase.
Uh-oh. Somebody in (Can we all guess where?) who writes the stencil board for passenger side mirrors screwed up. Probably has some sort of fetish...

That or you went to a carnival funhouse where the idiot who set up the tent puts up stupid little disclaimers to spoil the show...

3. You mean the passenger side mirror did NOT say "larger"?
(was it the funhouse addendum that had you alter your OP? )

5. "Larger" was funnier, though...
Of course, how long before we do see that mis-phrasing on actual passenger side mirrors...

6. I actually know the answer to this **SPOILER ALERT*
The passenger's side mirror is actually a different type of mirror than the driver's side mirror. The driver's side is flat but the passenger's side mirror is slightly convex. This causes the mirror to compress images making them smaller (and therefore seemingly farther away than they actually are). They are designed this way to give you a wider range of vision.

8. Then didn't Meatloaf have it backwards?
"Objects in the rearview mirror may appear closer than they are."
