MANILA, Philippines -- Brigadier General Bienvenido R. Castro, highly decorated combat veteran of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars who spent his final years working for the welfare of Korean War veterans, died recently from leukemia. He was 83. His body lies at the St. Ignatius mortuary in Camp Aguinaldo. Interment will be on Saturday at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Castro is survived by his wife, Aurora, children and in-laws Yvonne, Jojit and Lyn, Kit and Jovy, Malou, Kathy and Pierre, Dawn and Arfie, Bernard and Suzette and Tom; and 17 grandchildren.

Castro was president of the Peftok Veterans Association, Inc. (PVAI) from 1998 until his death. He was also first vice president of the International Federation of Korean War Veterans Associations (IFKWA) and worked for the peaceful reunification of the two Koreas. Peftok or the Philippine Expeditionary Force to Korea consisted of five battalion combat teams (BCTs) that fought in the Korean War (1950-53) and helped police South Korea from 1954-55 following the signing of the Armistice in 1953.

Castro served in Korea as a 2nd lieutenant and forward observer in the field artillery battery of the 20th BCT, the second BCT sent to Korea. The 20th fought in battles against communist North Koreans and Chinese along the demilitarized zone (DMZ) in which artillery firepower was a dominant factor. In Vietnam, Castro served in the Philippine Civic Action Group (Philcag) stationed in Tay Ninh province. Castro was a guerrilla in World War 2 and a member of the UP Vanguard. He was also a member of the Veterans Federation of the Philippines.

1. I thought I had heard rumors of that yesterday
and then the story sort of disappeared. Is his only "evil" crime that of being communist? I really never understood what the whole deal was with Cuba.

2. Simple Mathematics my dear
Cuban Refuges of the late 50's early 60's = Batista Loyalist = Pro-fascism or Neo Feudalism = Blind unquestioning support and votes for the Republican Party.

4. so do you suppose they think they're going to get back their sugar plantations when Castro dies?
It will certainly be interesting to see what, if anything, changes when he finally passes.

5. Here's whats going to change when Castro dies = NOT A GODDAMN THING!!
Nothing will change is Cuba because the GOP will not permit it. The Cuban communist government is the Emmanuel Goldstien of South Florida and the GOP needs it like that. The Caudillo's of the Batista regime have to be full of shit if they think they're going to get there old Plantations back if the communist regime ever falls, because they're is about 4-5 families living in their old Haciendas.
