You know, the Lounge has become my sanctuary (Rant coming, but an important one to me)
I am an outspoken individual, and I do not shy away from political and ethical discussions with a wide variety of individuals. It used to be that these discussions were almost always civil, but a funny thing happened about 6 years ago. After 9/11 I suddenly found myself facing a lot of harsh, demeaning, and horrible slurs from those on the right. I was called a traitor at a Thanksgiving dinner, I've had people say that "Guys like you" should be executed for their beliefs. I was un-American. I was an appeaser. I was a criminal. I endured what might seem like a trivial thing when looking at what others have faced, but it still hurt to know I provoked such ugliness just for being an open anti-war democrat.

Over time, the insults began to dwindle for myself, and I am sure for others, as well. The rest of the country seemed to wake up to the fact that we were headed in the wrong direction and that people like me were not advocating the destruction of the American way of life (whatever that may be). In 2006, both houses of Congress were wrestled from the grasp of the far right for the first time in what seemed like a long time. We, and I am using the royal we here, won. Those of us who faced the slings and stones from the vocal right-side of the political spectrum remained standing triumphant--bloodied but unbowed.

Imagine my surprise then to see a new movement emerge within our broad tent not of civil disagreement/discussion but of flat out nastiness. New names are being thrown around to people of differing beliefs--suddenly we have descriptions of posters (and our representatives) that include things like democrat in name only, political whore, uneducated, ignorant, war enabler, racist, sexist, disconnected, traitor to the party, and criminal.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who remembers dealing with those barbs during our long period of darkness, and I truly hope I'm not the only one saddened and frustrated to see our peers now using the same sort of language to attack those who are here on this site because we share something in common. Listen, I want debate. I want to hear about the pluses and minuses of all candidates, I want to see social responsibility discussed with opposing viewpoints, and I want to see that the art of debate and argument are still practiced. I do not want to see any of us fall to the same level of vindictiveness that characterizes bullies.

GD and GDP have become wastelands to me due to this horrible increase in hostility. I get upset trying to read through threads, and I find myself wondering if I can even still identify myself with posters here at DU. Some days it is just overwhelming.

But through it all, I find myself returning here. I find people who can joke with others even when they disagree. I find people who have grown so comfortable with others that the most personal of information is shared. I see a community, something that doesn't seem to be present in the other "big" groups on DU any longer. I know I can come here for a laugh, for advice, for a hug (or to give one), and for support. I find Loungers to be united in the important things even when the threads seem silly. I know that when someone is hurt in anyway the community will rally behind him or her.

So let me say to all of you, and I know many of your names and stories even if you know very little about me, thank you for providing a haven for those like me. I can't imagine a better place to be on the web.

4. I'll tell you the truth about me and DU
Edited on Thu Aug-23-07 01:25 AM by enigmatic
If not for The Lounge, I would have left DU long ago.

GD and GD-Politics have become unreadable to me mostly for the same reasons as yours; there is very little debate there anymore, just screaming an insulting resulting in a twisted sort of emotional crack-induced "high". I know there are people who get off on anger, and who it's directed at has little consequence; I used to be one of those people, until I realized how pointless it is.

The Lounge isn't perfect by a stretch, but it's much, much closer to being some semblance of a "family" of like-minded individuals all striving for the same political/idealogical goal then just about anyplace else here. It has it's cattiness and flamewars, but when people need help and a shoulder to lean on, there are more than a few here that will gladly lend both w/o a second thought, no matter how they feel about the person and their posts elsewhere.

I thought about this thread tonight while reading another in the endless porn threads that have taken over GD:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x6859198

And almost posted it in a couple of those threads hoping that some posters would drop the screaming and the bile to do something directly to help not only another DUer and his girlfriend but 2 human beings who need comfort in the most horrible times, but I didn't want them to get get any indirect bile, so I didn't.

I know it's become the cliche of cliches but seriously; can't we all get along? Especially since we're supposedly on the same side?

11. We care too. many GD threads like the one you refer to are moved. To the lounge.
Because they are considered "vanity" threads. So they are moved to a forum where nobody knows the people being talked about.

You all have a fun thing going here, but why every week does there have to be a thread about how horrible GD is? Why can't you enjoy the lounge without criticizing a companion board? "Can't we all get along? Especially since we're supposedly on the same side?" is right! How many times do you see a thread "Ooooh look what's going on in GD"... we're not animals in a fishbowl over there. It's not fun being analyzed all the time. Believe it or not, I have made many warm online friendships in that forum, while discussing the matters of the world. :)

6. I've found lately that I'll still come to DU to check for news...
but half the time I don't bother to read the threads themselves. Just the OP. Then I go into the interesting forums, like here in the lounge, for intelligent discussion. :)

7. scratches his head and does his best James Dean
thees ees new?

Oops, I'm sorry that was Jaques Chirac.

Hostility and GD are like love and marriage. The go together like a horse and carriage.

Has there really been that much quiet between the impeachment wars and the porn wars.

Here are some early replies to me (which I will always cherish)

"Why use english when you can use German like a good little Nazi? 11-25-04

Shut the fuck up. You have no clue about living in poverty. I'm done. 12-29-04

Really, you people are just full of it. ibid

I still say you're full of shit and not telling the entire truth about your economic situation. ibid"

9. GD has been like that since the last presidential primary season began.
It's a function of the amount of traffic it gets. It used to (circa 2002) move much more slowly, and people would talk much more calmly. But now a posted thread is off the front page in minutes, so only the most inflammatory discussions remain.

As the site traffic grows, DU should really consider a points-based moderation system like Slashdot has.

8. "Guys like you"
are the reason I come to the Lounge. There is an abundance of good people here and I'm proud to know you all. This is the gem of DU and the people who can't or won't recognize it don't deserve the Lounge's warm embrace. Peace out my friends.

10. Cool, Hey There Hi There Ho There!, Anytime, and I hear'ya bout GD; the current spate...
of porn threads, and before I go too much further should mention that GD/GDP have always imo suffered from what I continue to maintain is a shared/collective myopia only able to digest the news links of maybe two people so much so that they could post a link to The Yellow Pages, or random pgs from: The Joy Of Cooking, and receive 44recs...so much so...that they're only able to view links & matters through the eyes of a slight few people so there's that; but the current spate of porn threads are indicative, and mightily so, of just how little is actually being discussed in 'general discussion' i.e. the genre hasn't even been explored as to it's Rx of addictive, endorphin releasing pass-times in patently lonely, dark little rooms filled with desperately manic people seeking an ever bigger, no...wait for it; but an ever bigger Rx rush of low dollar, low impact cyber-sex. Some of them are here in the lounge, and too many think they're merely cute, warm, or wannabe fuzzy Teddy Bears; but certain elements of predatory natures are clear and so these matters require maturity and perhaps there is where we let the whole tent down, just let it fold for lack of mature, progressive, forward thinking efforts to maintain it aloft, as well...

Most people want to be seen or appreciated as vital, and so a current frenzy to establish 'deep modem status' is to me also telling...and time consuming. I'm pretty sure I virtually do not have the time to sit around virtually *all day long* posting virtual links to virtual stories into a cyber-world.

There once was he, who expressed his pleasures when we argued stating such matters thus and I paraphrase,

'We're Democrats, Dammitt!! That's what we do! We fight!! We ball up our fists! We hop up & down!! We fight/argue!!! We're passionate!! We're made as hell & we're not going to take it anymore!!! Deal with it! This is who we are!! Because I am glad we're finally arguing about how important it is to have lost this country to (fill in the blank).'

So now we do and too often too vitriolic-ally, bile ridden-ly so because some errant priest has sanctioned such behaviors, made them holy (small 'h'), and absolved them from within their pre-state of being delivered as tiny little monsters awaiting their birthdays however...

What he did not mention along with the rest before even he trundled off & away, and probably should have, was, apparently...

"We're democrats, dammitt!! We seldom win elections cause we're far too busy arguing with & snarking amongst each other with: hetero/breeder police, gay police, fashion police, vegan police, grammar police, meat police, civil rights police, liberal/progressive holier-than-thou police, porn police, SUV police, mini-cooper police, corporate franchise sports police, the Dalai Lama is a Fascist police, etc, etc, etc, yada-yada-yada. And when we do the opposition still out maneuvers us because we're too busy out maneuvering each other."

No, it's sad instead, watching not just GD/GDP but the damn whole kit & caboodle just ah'trying to be all that it can be

And so I say, "Cheers to'ya, instead!! My name is bridgit, Queen of The Borg. Would you be so kind, Sweety, as to buckle my head to my ass-bone? Cause that would be really swell. Here's thanking you in advance."

:toast:

12. Soon you'll learn that the Lounge is populated with just
the same- people.

In fact, since it's more loose here with regard to subject matter, it's even worse.

In other words, you'll be back to GD in no time. Good luck to you.

16. I find myself happy here
I'm not a debator, so I don't feel the need to post in GD. I still stay updated with current events without getting into a pissing match on every point. I've made a lot of friends here and a few very good friends and I wouldn't change that for the world.

If you ever see a DU sticker on the back of a mom mobile driving around the area, give me a wave!
