Greenville Church Burns the Bible
:file under 'WTF':

http://fox17.trb.com/080303-wxmi-books,0,2095270.story?coll=wxmi-home-2&

GREENVILLE -- A church in Greenville thinks the Harry Potter books are part of an evil cult, so church leaders decided to have an old-fashioned book burning, but children's books were not the only things that went into the fire.

"They have changed it the key points in the Bible," said Bishop Tom Turner Sr. of Jesus Non-Denominational Church in Greenville.

"The majority of it's probably the same, but it takes just a little bit to mislead people."

So the Book of Mormon, versions of the Bible, even the Catholic Rosary, all went up in flames.

Church leaders say any Bible besides the King James version that they use, are distractions.

10. Book Burning????
Sorry, but the books aren't the part of this that upsets me the most. I hope you're not saying that burning up other people's religion is acceptable. I'll assume not.

16. They burned more than books
Reducing burning the Book of Mormon and the Catholic Rosary to book burning is ignoring the truth of what they're doing. Whether these people are fundamentalists or Baptist influenced, I don't know; but it's evident that they're promoting their religion as the ONLY religion and that's far more dangerous than any stupid Harry Potter book burning.

I would think by decrying book-burning that the poster doesn't care for Bible burning either.

14. I'm a Recovering Southern Baptist...
And this blind adherence to the KJV is moronic! The preacher at the last Baptist church I attended had a tag on the front of his pick-up truck that read KJV 1611.

These King James idjits typically pray in Elizabethan English... As if God and Jesus talk like Shakespeare!

What I find amusing is that most of the simpletons who will read nothing but the KJV are the type to scoff at Shakespeare and ridicule the language. They jest caint understand that thar poetic stuff.

But not entirely unexpected.

Unfortunately, I think there is a very good chance that this is just the beginning.

but the extremism of the action will only serve to reinforce the perspective that these people are absolute zealots with more than a few loose screws.

11. These people don't like Liberals Like Christ
Fundies really prefer ultra-conservative Paul to Jesus, and all you have to do is listen to them or read their materials to see whom they are always quoting. See http://www.LiberalsLikeChrist.Org/PaulvsAll to see where they get their feelings of superiority over Jews, blacks, women, gays, etc., etc.

18. Amen...
I tried to point out to those at my last (and I do mean LAST) Baptist church how Paul and Jesus were diametrically opposed on most issues! How Jesus comissioned Peter to establish his church. How Peter tried to work with Paul to found Christianity, but the two were so at odds that they went their seperate ways. Peter didn't write much... Paul did.

Bottom line, Paul inverted the teachings of Jesus and, because he wrote so many letters that became canonized, the bulk of Christianity is actually the Pauline perversion thereof. Petrine Christianity, as comissioned by Jesus, fell through the historical cracks.

Edited on Mon Aug-04-03 11:08 PM by undisclosedlocation
http://www.jesusndc.org/home.htm They rave about being a Holy Ghost Anointed Ministry. My theology is pretty friggin' rusty, but this sounds like a Pentecost reference, ie, before Paul. So if you're right about the KJV, and I have no reason to think you aren't, these folks are not only stupid and crazy but also very, very confused.

you gotta say which Greenville with headlines like that. There are like 18 different Greenville's in the US. I'm from the one in Texas and while it wouldn't have surprised me if this had been my Greenville I'm tickled and relieved to find out it isn't.

What's so special about King James' version?

And aren't they ALL "books of God"?

Why aren't these people who oughtn't play with matches turning into pillars of salt or something?!

That they may have something in common with these folks. They enjoyed the practice of burning books as well.

"Narrow-minded idiots" is the only perjorative I can come up with right now to describe the ignorance.

29. Michigan, near Grand Rapids
Double-checked this. It's probably the northernmost 'Greenville' in the United States.

Well, at least we can't blame it on the Mississippians or South Carolinians! (Both of these states have cities named Greenville).

say where this Greenville is but there was a story about Illinois. That was after I saw the Fox headline with the girl sticking her tongue in the guy's ear as a promo for a reality show.

What a bizarre Web Site....well, it's Faux so what does one expect. Do a story about "book burnings" under a pix of a gal sticking toungue in guy's ear...........
