I want to always be able to laugh at almost everything. The alternative (to me) is to start down the slope where laughter is only acceptable in specified situations where it is safely bland and non-toxic, like fish that has had the fish flavor removed.

Do you remember the character of Jorge in The Name of the Rose? He felt that no one should laugh because Jesus never laughed and laughter was consequently a sin. I think that original PC, which began as genuine respect for women and minorities and the disabled and people from other cultures, has been extended so far beyond the realm of respect that it now intrudes upon all forms of humor. Humor is under assault in our culture, from many angles, and I resent this one being added to it.

A while back, someone here in the Lounge equated making generic men vs. women jokes with joking about disabled people, and it really chapped me. It’s not the same thing. And making a joke about Hillary’s boobs is not demeaning to Hillary as a person. Although I’m not a fan of the lady, I do believe she has the sand to laugh it off, because any sensible person knows that a cartoon of Hillary in no way reflects on the truth of who and what she is. It can only mock her truth, and that's what really upsets people: we can never mock, no matter how subtly, no matter if it's in foolish good fun or full of venom and contempt, because there is apparently no difference between these two things. All laughter is mockery, and therefore...after a while...it seems that there are only two categories of people: those who must not be mocked, and those who it is acceptable to mock. Like the republicans.

Important and critical difference.

One has two choices when faced with offensive material: Try to ban it/have it censored, which is the Gestapo (or Right Wing Christian, Or Fundy Islamic, etc. option), OR one can realize that people have a legitimate right to air their own opinions, no matter how much they might differ from one's own or offend one's sensibilities.

And if someone decides to take the first option, the rest of us have the right (and moral responsibility, I think) to call them on it, and say, "Hey - that's really wrong; that's very like what the Gestapo/Falwell/Osama Bin Laden/Reagan would do - perhaps you would like to reconsider your call for censorship, and just leave it at calling the guy an asshole, which is fine".

Then the person can say, "Oh, you're right - how unjust of me, let me change my statement" or "Sod off", in which case the one making issue can leave the discussion, because clearly no dialog will happen.

Had Shakespeare only said "I find that really offensive", that would be one thing. But to say "It should be removed because I find it offensive" is to move into dark moral territory.
