Didn't like wearing underwear specifically because of VPL.

However, for the Seven Year Itch "subway grate" scene, she wore two pairs so her, er, unbleached hair wouldn't show under the bright Klieg lights. The two pairs didn't work, numerous bystanders got an eyeful at the outdoor shoot, and husband Joe DiMaggio stalked off in a huff.

17. It was actually filmed twice

The outdoor shoot was unusable (shot from 1-5 am), due to the crowd (reportedly 5000) and the resultant hoots every time her skirt went up. And even though it was a real subway grate, apparently there was a fan underneath, since they could hardly wait patiently for a train to come by.

So Billy Wilder re-staged the shot on a set, and that's the footage that we see in the film.

After the outdoor shoot, Marilyn and Joe had a shouting match in the hotel lobby, and DiMaggio filed for divorce shortly thereafter.
