14. Times have changed
It was always wrong to drive drunk but you had to be pretty damned drunk for anyone to even mention it back then 20 years ago when I was a young punk. I remember one occasion in particular where the next day I looked at how poorly I had parked my car and it really struck me how reckless I had been. I was just really lucky that nothing bad happened.

I hardly ever drink anyway, but I don't have even one drink if I might have to get in the car for any reason before morning.

A family friend survived being hit by a drunk driver but he lost an arm. I could never in a million years do that to anybody.

I dom however, care about all the innocent people who she could kill. I've had a friend murdered by a drunk driver.

We need much harsher measures in this country against people who do this. Ugh.

As many time sin my youth I was blind drunk, I never drove drunk, allowed anyone to, or got in a car with anyone who was. Doing so is criminal and irresponsible.

At least she asked before she did anything stupid. Maybe she just needed to hear it from us

and she shouldn't go for the cigarettes.

I will never get over it. You ask a fucking stupid question and get snippy when you get the right answers?

It's NOTHING to joke about - no matter what.

Lots of loved ones of innocents who were killed, and disabled (both emotionally and physically) folks out there that would love to see anyone who can't fucking control themselves with their drinking to live in our shoes for a few days to see what the aftermath is after your binge. It's no fucking fun to have your life turned upside down because some asshole has not self control.

30. Very rarely and no hard liquor.
I'm tiny and I have a fast metabolism. I drink about a beer and a half and I fall asleep, which is fine with me because I'm not crazy about the feeling anyhow.

I go through maybe two cases of beer a year, and most of those wind up in my sister and her friends when they run out of whatever they're working on and raid the fridge.

34. Let me count the ways....
When I was much younger and much more stupid, I and my peers would drive fitshafed.
I can recall drinking beer all night in Georgetown only to join a friend in a test of who can hold the most tequila shots. I had 7 shots and I am all of 4'11".

I drove across Memorial bridge (even though I started out in Georgetown)with one eye covered so I could see to drive. Mind you, we are talking 35 years ago.

The Capitol Police would catch me on several occasions but were more amused by my antics and just told me to be careful. I was a real hoot when drunk back then.

I can't tell you how many times I drove home drunk...more than I can count. That one eye trick really works when you are crosseyed drunk. The awareness was not there back then...we did not know the consequences.

Nowadays, I wonder how in the hell I survived or managed not to ever have an accident.
My daughter does not know my history as I don't want to condone my actions. (ie, I got away with it, and you can, too)

If I have even ONE drink nowadays, I will not drive at all. If I go out with a group of friends, I will volunteer as the designated driver and will not have anything besides soda to drink....I don't want to HAVE to trust them to keep sober.

Shhh....don't tell my daughter, k?

35. No you shouldn't drive
yes I've driven drunk when I was young and stupid. I haven't drank in 22 years now, but I drove drunk, and I'm not proud of that. I'm amazed I didn't kill anyone. I couldn't have lived with myself if I had. So I'm very glad for those people I put at risk by my idiocy, that I didn't kill or hurt them and I'm very sorry that I did such stupid things. I came out of a blackout driving the wrong way on a four lane highway. They say insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting a different outcome.

It was always the same. Somehow the higher power must have intervened in the lives of others and in me. Because I should never have been driving and you don't need cigars. Not at the risk of hurting or killing someone because you were drunk.

37. I think...
...that driving drunk is the most irresponsible thing a person could ever do.

I think to even consider it means you'd better tuck yourself the fuck into bed and forget about your goddamn cigars.

I think that you should call your best friend to come over and take your car keys away from you until you give up drinking altogether.

I think anyone who gets behind the wheel drunk deserves life imprisonment to keep them from killing any one of the rest of us.

I think drunk drivers are the fucking scum of the earth.

I think if you need proof of how fucked-up drinking and driving is, I'd be happy to show you pictures of people with their skulls sliced off down to their eyebrows due to assholes who thought they could drive 0.3 miles drunk without incident.

I think drunk drivers should be forced to attend the funeral of a dead teen and hold the hand of her mother throughout the entire Rosary, and see if they can keep from crumpling under the unfairness of it all.

I think drunk drivers should be sentenced to serving ten years catering to the most intimate needs of paraplegic accident victims.

I think the very question of whether one should even entertain the idea of driving drunk makes me want to vomit.

I think you should look at this:

Sign me,

Lost Three High School Friends
Due to Fucked-Up, Irresponsible
Drunk Drivers, All of Whom Are in

Actually, in college, I was the least "drunk" (meaning not all that much) and I was sent to the liquor store for more beer, with male escort, of course . That is when I learned to drive a "stick". That would be how to manage a clutch and get into the proper gears. We were PAs sometimes known as personnel/residential assistants. Yes, well...we had been drinking a lot of beer. Anyhoo... 47. Honey, get a grip. I would never do that now. It was a different world back then.
Really different. And if you will note, I wasn't really "drunk". It was college, we were the responsible kids, the PA's. Sorry to have offended. The 60's and before were really different. If we had been stopped the police would have told us to go home. Back then kids weren't even in car seats. The car seats that were available were unsecured, they had bars that fit under the seat cushions. And seat belts...if you had them they quickly disappeared into the cushions. And that is truth to tell. Would I do that now? No, of course not. I'm so sorry to have offended, but, many folks my age have some experiences similar to that one. And, yes, it was hilarious at the time. And I did learn to use a clutch.

And I knew all about the consequences, my mom was an R.N. in a rural hospital. That was when R.N.'s still wore white and their skirts rustled when they walked down the hall. One night she needed a complete change of clothes, including shoes, because there was so much blood from car accident victims. Maybe I'm just a bit too used to dark humor. There are a lot of doctors and nurses in my family, and EMT's. The stories can be pretty gross, and they laugh about some pretty dark things. I think humor helps them get through the tragedy.

Care, conscience, and shame. For that particular experience...no.

49. Glad you've seen the error of your ways since your careless youth.
Beyond that:

1) Don't pull the age card on me. I remember the LSD-fueled 60s -- and the coke-fueled 70s -- quite well. There is no excuse for fucking oneself up and endangering the lives of others. You want to kill yourself on booze, coke, horse, whatever your pleasure? Great, have at it -- but stay home and don't risk killing me or my loved ones on the road. And don't insult me with lame excuses about the "60's and before" being "really different." Dead is dead is dead -- and stupid and irresponsible and reckless is still stupid and irresponsible and reckless, no matter the decade.

2) My grip's just fine, thanks.

3) Don't call me "honey."

4) If your mom was an R.N., you should have known better, whether you were/are 8, 18, or 68. No excuses. Drunk driving is irresponsible and unforgivable.

5) You were fucking lucky. I'm glad it's so "hilarious" to you now. I pray to God you will always be able to shuck it off with such devil-may-care nonchalance.

54. You weren't driving drunk?
"Actually, in college, I was the least "drunk" (meaning not all that much)..."

Are you going to try to convince me now that a person can be just a little bit pregnant, too? Drunk is drunk is drunk.

Stop hedging. Own it. You drove drunk. You grew up. You are an adult now, and you don't do it anymore. Good. I sincerely applaud you for seeing the error of your early years. I thank you, on bended knee, and with bowed head, for ceasing to endanger my life, and the lives of the people I love.

My only "issue" here is with drunk drivers. Kindly do not attempt to undermine my point, which is simply: Drunk driving is stupid, irresponsible, and reckless. It is not some funny, gee-whiz-I-was-just-a-kid youthful indiscretion. It is not "hilarious." It is dead serious.

60. We are at cross purposes here.
"It depends on what your definition of drunk is." was tongue in cheek, somewhat clintonesque. And yes, I was not all that drunk. You are sensitized to that. I'm not. And pretty much, that is where we are. I reread my post, and it was a bit over the top, way too many smilies. I just read your post about your friend. I didn't read any of the previous posts to this thread when I first responded. I am so sorry. I would not have so posted as I did.

Also, if I had been over the limit, I wouldn't have been able to drive the car, back then, pretty much any car. I didn't drink that much. That is why the responsible guys sent me to the liquor store, with an escort. I'm the girl guys took home after teen night at the community center with the girl they were staying with sat in the middle of the front seat. I can't tell you how Taylor Swift that was.

Again, I am sorry about your friend. We have recently lost a brave young man to the current conflict, the older brother of two of my son's best friends. My pain must be a shadow of yours. Peace

I'm just surprised to hear anyone say that drinking and driving is unforgivable...and at DU of all places.

65. Thank you.
Folks have drinks, or a drink, and drive all the time. It is the over the legal limit intoxicated, stupid idiots and immature kids that cause most of our problems and tragedies. And please, any one noting this, I said, "most". I am not advocating driving drunk. I even discourage driving and talking on a cell phone, as my children are perfectly able to explain to you. But they won't... most likely.

48. I don't drive drunk.
I have people check me out every fifteen minutes until I'm sober when I'm getting ready to go home.

56. BTW
When I was young and stupid, I only drank around people and if I were staying with someone, I'd make plans to stay the night. On the other hand, I was often the hostess. so I let people stay over if we were going to be drinking. I remember one night my friends taped me "snoring" without me being aware of it, and it was a good laugh the next day.

63. cigars? what kind do you smoke?
I prefer cigarillos. Best I've had in that category have been Davidoff Silvers; for flavored cigars--I don't smoke alot, so I can still taste things--mildly flavored CAO's are nice, and Drew Estate Naturals Acid cigarillos if I feel like smoking a pixie stick.

But tell me-- what do you smoke?

71. No.
I have two close relatives who have, though, and thankfully the cops picked them up before they killed themselves or someone else. Don't do it. Go sleep it off and THEN get the cigars if you really, really have to at that point.

When I was young and stupid.

Now I prefer being sober when I drive. It's like russion roulette and I'm damn lucky I never got hurt nor have I hurt anyone in the process.

It was very stupid of me to do it
