My wife started her new job at the bank
and they are requiring her to open an account there so *they* can deposit her paycheck into it. So this means she never gets to see the check, only the stub listing the deductions. She was told she can whatever she wants with the money after that, but I sense otherwise.

Didn't this sort of thing disappear as a result of the women's movement of the 70's?

2. I had to do the same thing when I worked at a bank
you never see the check with direct deposit.

3. I think that's pretty common
my sister worked at a bank and they required she have an account with them for her paycheck.

5. Not just banks...
Lots of employers basically demand that you set up direct deposit. In their defense, printing all those checks is a massive waste of money.

4. There's no problem if they allow her to maintain a zero balance.
They're just trying to save a buck by eliminating the "check."

6. I filled out a form at work which was not explained to me well and I thought was manditory...
they also required me to attach a voided check (???). Now I don't get a paycheck anymore, but there is always money in my account for using the credit card the bank gave me...which I never receive a bill for. WTF?

8. I wouldn't worry about it.
It's nothing against her-lots of companies are now moving to DD instead of checks. And most banks automatically pay with DD on an account at their own bank-good advertising and it makes perfect sense. It probably wouldn't look good for an employee to use another bank-makes it look like their bank isn't good enough.

11. That's the point - I'd rather have it in a credit union. :)
We can work around it. The money I need from her to cover the bills I can get, the rest she can do what she wants with it.

13. I belong to a credit union but
from what I understand they have the same policy with their employees.

Leave it at a one dollar balance and do what you want.

9. I worked for a bank for about a year (late 2005 to late 2006)....
...and I was remotely based. I was a student loan lender rep. They required direct deposit, but because they have no branches in the state where I live, they were more than happy to do direct deposit with my current bank. Electronic processes save them lots of money, and I prefer direct deposit anyway.

I suspect her bank is getting some sort of financial benefit for moving the money from one account of theirs to another. They are able to save the fees associated with direct deposit to another financial institution (and yes, there are fees between banks).

10. I don't think I've received a check in over a decade
It's always been direct-deposited into a bank. That way there is no "waiting period" to release funds, and I have the money immediately available to pay bills.

Of course, I never write checks either, it's all done electronically.

12. Me, too. I love direct deposit. It is so very convenient.
Plus my check is deposited on midnight before payday. That way, the money is available that morning.
